If looks could kill!!

ExpresbroParticipant
I’d be dead meat by now!! Took this in Dublin Zoo last weekend with the Sigma 70-300 through the horrible glass on the horrible enclosure that this big Silverback and his family have to live in.
It’s no wonder really that he looks so pissed off…
I really think that if animals like this have to kept in captivity in the first place, they should be given a much bigger and more stimulating environment to spend their days in. Hopefully Dublin Zoo have plans for the Gorilla’s in the future. Be nice to see them somewhere up in the African Plains section like the Chimps.
Anyway…end of rant..here’s the shot :D

8)mgstParticipantnfl-fanParticipantI agree… the enclosure which the gorillas are in is probably one of the saddest sights in Dublin zoo… and as for the glass… makes you want to ask for your money back.
This is an amazing photo… I know we are closely related to gorillas (some more than others) but this really almost feels almost human… the look, the facial expression, the eyes. It’s a brilliant capture.
Did the shot come off clean through the glass or did you have to compensate during post-processing?
kenhParticipantLove this shot too – the lighting lends a very nice warmth to the shot.

Alan RossiterParticipantUh-oh, you’re in deep do-do mate!
Remember Hauke took an image of this fella stripping his teeth? And where is he now? I’d be watching your back…and front if I were you!
Regarding the image – I’d have liked to have seen his hands (?!?) more but I think the look dominates this image way more than what detracts from it. Hey, maybe next time someone could jump in with a reflector for his left side? Whadda ya tink?
Alan
jb7ParticipantI haven’t been to a zoo in such a long time-
but I remember the gorillas and their incarceration-
and what seemed like some symptoms of serious depression-Though perhaps, on the other hand, they’re not the jolliest of primates anyway-
Good picture this-
maybe if there was some way to represent your critical comments about the zoo in a picture,
it could be a great one-Not one for the people section Robbie?

TinyMemberExpresbroParticipantHey Joseph…I’ll leave that to Sharon with her People Poodles…hehe!!
Thanks for the comments guys…I remember Hauke’s shot…and speaking of doo doo…I think there was a bit involved there too
The shot was pretty much okay from the camera… had a bit of flare on his back..so had to do a bit of work to level that out..but otherwise didn’t have to do a lot. Burn the background a little as it was a bit distracting. I just moved around a little (avoiding the little old ladies elbows) till I found a half decent spot. Took quite a few shots of him munching on his shoots, then he just turned for a brief second and looked our way..not even sure if it’s anger or just sadness in his eyes. As joseph says, I think there may well be some symptoms of depression going on with this guy.
Maybe next time I’ll throw a box of Lexapro over the glass to him.
Seriously though, I’ve watched many documentaries on Gorillas, and they are probably a lot less like us than the Chimps. They are very gentle animals, thoughtful…intelligent and not really prone to attacking other creatures or each other like Chimps. Not like us at all really
RayK1MemberExpresbroParticipantDenverDollParticipantI just saw this on you flickr and was about to leave you kudos there.
I have seen a lot of shots of this gorilla.
This one is sooo good.
You really did capture a sort of disgust…distrust..on his face.
It’s very endearing.
I’ll be your reflector girl if you wanna follow Alan’s suggestion and Joseph’s challenge.
Shar..(Poodles are people too)
ExpresbroParticipantYa reckon huh?
I know I said Gorillas are gentle by nature…but I dunno…a little American girl with a big white reflector in her hand in his enclosure might raise his heckles a little bit…
Still..might make for some great shots…hehe!!
RimaMemberGreat capture, Robbie. I wonder how have you convinced this Silverback to pose for you? Because usually he goes away or turns his back when sees camera pointed at him :o :)
ExpresbroParticipantJust my charm and personality Rima…heheh!!
Me and him are old buddies
lousyParticipantHe’s definitely not one to be messed with!
Great shot Robbie and title.
