First attempt at Street Photography- C+C welcome-

    So go easy folks-

These were taken on a single roll of Ektachrome Professional EPN 135-36
    for a street photography project-
The requirements were 10 mounted slides for projection.

So I went out and took some pix, made the selection,
presented them, and promptly lost them.

Yesterday, while rummaging through an envelope of old prints,
I pulled out the slim yellow box of slides-
and while I’m not sure this is the actual set (I did have an alternate set from the same roll, every picture second best)
I’m pretty sure that this is all that remains-

If I were to attempt a project like this today,
I’m sure I’d make something like 800 exposures,
    so times have changed-

So from Dublin, at least 25, and up to 28 years ago- (I can’t remember the actual year)-

    Apologies for the poor scans-
I can only make very rudimentary scans from 35mm-

This guy was a fixture outside Bewleys Cafe in Grafton Street for many years. Its possible I could date the pic from the mag if I did some research-
looks like Issue 122, March 6-19. Interesting that at this point it looks like the Catholic Church still owned St Patrick’s Day,
and In Dublin were too cool and right-on to have it on their cover-

Still, looks like however many years ago it was,
it was pretty much this time of year-

I used to pass this gentleman on O’Connell Bridge quite frequently in those days-
Quite a sad old man, but very dignified- with a bit of a warbly style-

Support Group. As far as I can remember, somewhere around Dorset Street.

Just north of The Four Courts- I’m sure I’d walk past a picture like this if it presented itself today.

Moore Street- I went into one of the shops, and asked if I could take a pic from a first floor window-
No problem. Quite close to the building that James Connolly was brought to after the evacuation of the GPO in 1916,
if not the same building. I didn’t know that then.

Moore Street again- I wasn’t to know that all the ‘Up the Provos’ graffitti would someday disappear,
otherwise, I might have made more of it-

Kindling, I think I’d call this one now. This one, I think, is on the site of the St Stephen’s Green Hotel, after they pulled down the Dandelion Market,
and almost the whole block, except for the College of Surgeons.

To put up that horrendous eyesore instead.

However, I could be wrong about the location-

The last three were just fillers, could have done better, so I wont put them up here-
    Any C+C welcome-

Great images I love the old photos of Ireland and its people. Those slides held up well and I remember taking slides years ago but never really of people or street. Those would be ones to cherish. Even if you found enough of them you could have an exhibition. My favourites are 1. 5 ,and the last one. My absolute fav is number 4 its a classic, the way the young girl interacts with the camera, the colour of the walls and the other little girls shadow crawling up those steps.Simple but brilliant ,you could crop out the top of the car and maybe straighten in a little

Great set Joseph. Sometimes when a batch of images come up I generally scroll through pretty fast, but I found myself getting involved in every shot. 27 years is a long time and these have stood the test of time well.
16 Moore Street is the location of the HQ after the GPO. It’s interesting to know if you had taken the shot from here.
    Cheers

    Thanks John, Pat,
    appreciate the comments-

I was disgusted to lose these,
and regretted their loss massively and disproportionately-
perhaps because it was the first time I went out specifically to take street pictures-

I had already formed a relationship with a 28mm Zuiko,
so I was determined to go out and get up close-

This was probably the first time I proved to myself that I could go out and get pictures-
So I’m glad you like them-

    About the Moore St. location-
    I couldn’t possibly identify it, I’m afraid-

And about the crop and rotation-
    well, its possible,
but not very easy if the brief requires you to present a mounted slide-
I had HCB full frame delusions in those days anyway…
and even the half mil all around taken off by the slide mount was too much-

These are brilliant J, my favourite is the last one. I didn’t read the text the first time, just looked at the images and I was wondering if you have taken these in the same city I know as Dublin… after reading the explanation, I realized, it was indeed an other Dublin. And I would prefer the people and mood seen on your pictures. At least you can still find the support groups in the same position on the doorsteps today :)

Hope you will find more of these or post more of your film era…

Fantastic set – there’s a great sense of character about these old pictures. Last one for me too Joseph, excellent shot.

    Thanks Zoltan, Thanks Beef-
I think the two with the kids in are the most engaging too-
25 years, and a different planet-

these photos are outstanding, Joseph, full of history, character and… sadness / pain. Like them all, especially kids and the old man. Thanks for sharing

    Absolutelybloodybrilliant!!!

What a wonderful glimpse back in time. This was the Dublin I spent my teens and early 20’s in…and it’s wonderful to see it in all it’s depressing dourness again.

These are precious Joseph..and whatever you do, don’t lose them again…

We have rolls of old 35mm film at home and even some 110’s..and god knows what’s on them, but I know there’ll be nothing like this.

Am I gushing? Sorry..heheh!! I really do think they are some of the best images I’ve seen on PI ever. That last shot would hold up in any exhibition on Irish Photography anywhere.

I just hope you find the rest of them someday… 8)

Thank you all for all the nice comments-
    Not entirely sure they’re deserved-
I suppose, like the Gallaher series, these rely a lot on nostalgia-

Technically, these are suspect- movement the main culprit-
I could have done with higher ISO (ASA), faster lenses (my 28mm and 135mm were f/3.5)
and a much steadier hand- even today I have problems handholding,
    unless there’s VR involved-

The first shot shows that the interior lighting in Bewley’s was as bright as the exterior lighting-
not very bright- so I suppose I shouldn’t complain-

    Thanks again all-

J, these are great, I really like the support group picture, have been back a few times to look at it. I bet a lot of work went into these?
The comment about the HCB full frame delusions made me laugh. Must be something all students suffer from!!

Would like to see the other three.

    Thanks Sinead-
nice to get some feedback from a fellow student-
Good too that so many different ones have been mentioned-

I can’t really remember how much work went into them-
though a fair bit of walking must have-
Because only one roll of film was used, it became an exercise in looking first,
and only taking pictures that I knew I’d have some chance of using-
probably not a very fashionable idea these days-

But, shooting film yourself, you’re probably used to that too-

There really isn’t much point in putting the last three up-
10 out of 36 was a big ask, and even seven is pushing it-

Even today, if I were shooting 35mm, I think I’d like to shoot full frame-
I don’t have the same compunction with digital-
I think it has something to do with the framing of the image in the camera,
and the shadow it casts on the rebate-

I do feel the same way shooting Polaroid 55 (RIP) for the same reason-

    Thanks again for the coments-
