Picture from a recent portrait class

This is one of the shots I took from a recent portrait course I’ve taken. C&C Welcome.
RGH_PhotographyMemberIMO I think you should darken the ear and crop it a bit other than that its great and the eyes are very sharp :)
irishshaguaParticipantyeah a lovely bit of colour in the eyes. Would agree with Ricky about the ear. A little bit distracting…
jb7ParticipantA very clean looking picture-
nicely de-saturated, though the eyes do jump out a little-
for me, anyway-I like the space to the left,
but find it a little compressed vertically-
I might prefer a little more space below the chin,
and as the hand has been included
it seems maybe a little unnaturally cut off-It does look a bit like a study-
I wonder how much more powerful and direct it might have been
had you had some engagement from the sitter?Looks very good overall-
j
RobMemberThis is my third time back to look at this one, and I think
I’d have to agree with Joseph about the eyes – just a little
too much I reckon. Regarding the ear, unless it’s a picture of
Van Gogh I’d leave it as is….Rob.
bearloirParticipantImagineParticipantI’d take the black space from the left and add it to the right so he is looking into and across the frame rather than away and out, if that makes sens. Otherwise I like it.
Adam, if you can’t see the ear your monitor is WAY too dark.
D.
bearloirParticipantOkay!!! Time to calibrate me thinks… Looks great dark all the same :D
Adam.
summerdreamnMemberi had to ask as well, what ear??? i’m on safari on a mac and i checked on firefox, and lo and behold, there is an ear!!!! goes to google calibration-a-majig.
otherwise, as i had no ear to distract me, i think it’s a very strong portrait, the eyes are so sharp. not sure about the landscape orientation, as with jb7, maybe more of the chin/hand?
wayneleoneMemberThanks for the feedback and comments. I do need to remove the ear but I also need to calibrate my monitor as I hadn’t noticed it initially. The set up was camera + tripod. Aperture set to f8 1/125 sec. I was using 100mm lens.
There’s a large soft box off to the right of the camera but very close to the models face. That was the only light. The background was black (obviously) and I sued some black cloth to catch any stray lights. It’s probably a little tight to the left so might try to add some space as suggested. Unfortunately there was no cropping done originally which means I can’t bring any more of the image into shot. I desaturated the colours a little but then brought the eyes back into it. If I remember correctly I also did some sharpening in CS3.jb7ParticipantThis ear has caused quite a stir-
but if it means that a little flurry of calibration is about to happen,
then that can only be a good thing-Images posted for viewing on the web should be posted in sRGB colour profile-
in photoshop, go to Edit> Convert to profile, and choose sRGB-Only Safari supports colour profiles,
any other browser will (or may) display colours differently-I haven’t checked the sticky about posting pictures on the site-
perhaps it should be mentioned there, if it isn’t already?I’ve been banging on about this for a while-
I’ll shut up now-j
ExpresbroParticipantI can see the offending (it is offending right?) ear in Firefox, but it disappears in Safari…didn’t even bother checking IE as I never use it anyway.
wayneleoneMemberI know the model personally and I’m sure he’ll be delighted to know his ear is causing offence. :D
joe_elwayParticipantArgh – I only see the ear now that I’ve tilted my dodgy monitor at work. Nice shot Wayne … I have to agree with the others about darkening that part of the image.
BTW, I bumped into our old team leader (B.C.) from when we worked together back in the day. He was in the audience at an event I was presenting at on Tuesday.
