Can you use video heads for photography?

Mainly for landscapes so not so much of a problem. It has a 90 deg tilt back, so if I mount the camera at 90 deg to the proper way I can still shoot portrait orientation, or can I?

How much of a difference is there between the video heads and the pan and tilt heads?

Sorry if this is a really daft question!

the main thing with video heads, from the likes of vinten or schatchler is they have very good fluid movements for panning etc

they tend to be very heavy compared to a stills head

also pro video head dont fix to legs in the same way a stills head does

but yes it could be possible to use them just extra weight to carry etc

also depend on if the camera plate on your video head will work with thr right size thread for you stills camea

Hey Steve, remember that video head with the Sigma 300-800 – that was SOMETHING ELSE!!!! I want one … NOW!

I would have thought a pan/tilt would be better for landscape. I love the video style head on my cheap Manfrotto “Junior”. It’s great in the hide for wildlife. Wasn’t able to find anything like it for my 055 MF. Video style heads for photography seem to be built all wrong – the handle is on the wrong side – I want the handle on the left so I can fire the camera with my right.

Manfrotto dont make serious video heads

the handle on any decent video head can be switched to the other side without a problem

go have a look at Sachtler or vinten video tripods etc
