canon eos 40d error 99
-
eamo8Participant
hi all i have just bought a 40d brand new and when i try to take a picture it reads error 99 re-insert battery,or turn off then on!
its driving me nutts has anyone else had this problem or does anyone have any advice!! oh i should just mention it was bought in h.k so sending it back scares me a little!SanderMemberstcstcMemberI think the error 99 is a lens contact error
what lens do you have attached
maybe take the lens off and clean the contacts, carefully
markcapilitanParticipanterror 99 tends to be a catch all…could be anything! Clean lens contact, format memory cards might sort it.
Big FellaParticipantThis happened to me once on a 300d, turned out the lens wasn’t compatable with the Camera.
Stephen.
eamo8Participantthanks all have tried cleaning lens contact, changing lenses, formatted memory cards(3) on that camera and other camera, took out battery nothing seems to work.!! guess i’ll have to leave it in to canon, and spend the money i saved buying it in hong kong on getting it sorted!! really defeats the purpose, mabie there’s a lesson to be learned but hey its not the end of the world and i’m still smiling.
BMParticipantThis is most likely the lens you are using. If it is a non-Canon non-digital, you will get this message or Err1. Try using a Canon lens.
eamo8Participantthanks B.M. for feedback but unfortunatly it is a canon 17-85 mm is.usm lens which came with the camera and both where brand new infact i only got them on friday!!! also i have tried a canon 70-300mm lens with the camera only to find it still reads error 99!
stcstcMemberwhere are you based??
i have a 40d too, could try the lenes on mine if you want etc
BMParticipantEamo8, straight back to the shop, then. And don’t take any ould waffle from them (not saying they will!). If they can’t find a simple “user” set-up error, it should be a new box over the counter if it’s that new!
eamo8Participantah thanks very much for the offer but i’ve decided to send it back just got an e-mail from the shop i bought it in and he said he will change it for another i’m also waiting on 170-500 sigma lens and other bits and pieces from him so think it would be better he sorts it because if its just between me and him and all does not go well i can claim my money back

I don’t know about Canon,
but that blog makes for an interesting read-I buy stuff from abroad,
but usually used optics with mechanical shutters-I broke a lens last year, and took it back to Conns-
and they gave me a replacement while it was being mended-For some reason, its taking forever-
I did get it back, but the repair was faulty,
and had to be returned again-
and so I was given a replacement again-There is a piece of advice which is commonly given out in these threads-
“go into a camera shop, find out what feels right, then buy it where its cheapest”Personally, I would hate to be in the position you’re in, after spending a lot of money-
True, its a risk, and most people will take it and never have a problem-But I might consider the premium spent by buying locally to be a kind of insurance-
particularly if you buy from somewhere that has a policy of replacement equipment for the duration of repairs to your own-Especially with something involving complicated and sensitive electronics-

eamo8Participantthanks jb7 your off course right it would have saved a lot of messing and the extra money would have been like an inchurance but for the same price of the camera here i bought the same camera with lens, sigma 170-500 lens, battery grip,ex580 speed light and a remote cable, now the seller has 100% feed back and is doing this sort of buissness since 2003 so i taught it would be worth the risk!! i just hope that when i send it back and recieve my replacement its not going to do the same thing.. i’ll let you all know how i get on, thanks eamo8
jb7ParticipantThat sounds like a lot of extra gear for the money-
Including customs?Would be a big temptation alright…
