Didn’t think drinking was illegal (used in the loosest tense) today. People on trains can still purchase alcohol today. Anyways….
LaGwardiaParticipantreally?!?! i didnt know that, I wonder about Hotels…..
All over the city were sooooo many signs ‘due to licencing laws we are unable to serve alcohol tommorrow, friday 21st march etc etc’
I vaguely remember that on a sunday it was illigal to sell alcohol before 2pm…I think…..
Its just a bit odd that in a rapidly diversifying culture in terms of belief that the law still applies
irishshaguaParticipantWas in the paper. Soem concert in the Olympia or something are allowed to serve, the bar in heuston can serve if you have a train ticket and you can get served on a train. Something about an old law that says you can drink if you are travelling or something. Some barge on the liffey or canal can serve as well because their license has no fixed abode or some cop out like that.
Alan RossiterParticipantI just happened to be in Dublin today and in Stillorgan there was a queue outside a butchers…I’ve never seen that but they did sell fish too. Is there a shortage coming? Coming through Gorey I stopped off at a hotel that were serving meat and the bar was open (no sure for all but residents can avail of the facility). I think in a few short years the licencing laws for a “Good” Friday may change.
Ah yes – the Sunday holy hour. The pub opened at 12.30, shut from 2pm to 4pm and then shut again at 10.30 during the winter. Personally I’d rather go back to that way. The opera festival was a great event in Wexford every year because we had 3 weekends of extensions where you could drink until 12.30pm. Dizzy heights, I know! Dizzy mornings too I seem to remember  . But you appreciated it’s novelty not as it is now where this is considered early and well before the trouble starts on the streets.
It is a funny one though – Good Friday. My wife ate meat today and only realised afterwards her “mistake”. It’s still frowned upon but at one time Rancheros too would have been avoided. Alcohol though is a legislative move, not a religious one.
Alan.
PS – no meat…just in case.
joe_elwayParticipantI’m in no way religious. I have a dislike for organised religion but I do have a belief. Anyways, I wasn’t going to eat meat today but I ended up only having lunch at 16:30 when I stopped in a gas station. BLT without thinking. I’ve actually onl realised it now :) I bought a cheese pizza for tonight to even avoid meat! Ah well….
Hotel residents bars are open. Same in sports clubs apparently. I don’t like this forcing of beliefs on others. I’m probably going to have a quick drink with dinner before I get back to doing some writing this weekend.
RGH_PhotographyMemberbeefParticipantjoe_elwayParticipantThere was a text read out on Newstalk this morning from an offlicense owner. He said Easter week was usually his best week of the year thanks to the pubs closing for a Friday on a bank holiday weekend.
ExpresbroParticipantBloody hell lads!! I was quite happily sitting here with not a thought of alcohol…never even occurred to me about Good Friday.
Now what..I have a yearning for a Jack Daniels and Coke.
Damn yis to hell and back anyway!!!
(P.s No Jack Daniels in the house,…so have to make do with a Rum and Coke instead..plenty of ice.)
constantineParticipantpositronMemberNo meat today, but I rarely eat meat anyway. Drinks, oh yeah, its a Friday evening and I’ve had a long week. But then again, I don’t need an excuse because I dislike any organized religion that says their ways are better than others..! :)
LaGwardiaParticipanti hardly watch tv ever, and hardly ever use the net on my days off but after todays…’events’
And since my girlfriend is a lightweight and had to go to bed becasue ‘you are making them too strong’ regarding my wonderful Margaritas…i’ll tire myself online before sleep (no work till wendsday…bliss)i think it’s so ridiculous to impose a religious LAW upon an indifferent society. i agree, it is a matter of years before it is dropped. what is so shocking to me is more the respone of the public to it than the actual law….myself included…it was a niggling worry until i left the off licence on thursday night….
why? i have no idea….
although the talk of rum & coke did make me search under my bed for a long lost bottle of Havana Club Anjeo 3 Anos to hook up with lime & coke….
still Baby Girl & I ploughed our way through a full bottle of Olmeca, 3/4 a botle of triple sec, 17 coronas, a good measure of rum and a nagan of vodka…I ate alot of meat but she is a vegetarian….so i guess 2 outta 3 sins ain’t bad….
and with my homemade sour mix and making strawberry margaritas…i guess i got my 5 a day…..
organised religion…..oh my oh my….i think i prefer Fr Dougal’s interpretation of it rather than Niezches….
happy Easter all,
eat tons of eggs and have a great time whatever you guys do.
