So..Holidays!!

ExpresbroParticipant
So looks like myself and the family are gonna do two seperate weeks holidays this year. . One in Ireland and one somewhere in Europe (including the UK).
Tired of the Package holiday sun thing.
What I’d love is some recommendations (for my own selfish purposes of course  ) of places to go for a week in Ireland and Europe, that would satisfy the non photography obsessed part of the group and me…hehe!!
Our kids are 12 and 15 respectively ..so obviously that would have a bearing.
Any of you well travelled folks have any suggestions?
Thanks
Robbie
8)paulParticipantNever easy to keep everyone happy.
Last year my girlfriend and I went to Marseille. Weather was wonderful. Plenty to do and see all around the area. Churches, museums, islands, football stadium, etc. Also, brilliant for photography.
In Ireland, I’d have to say Kerry. The Ring of Kerry or out to Dingle. Stunning scenary for photography, plenty of walks to keep everyone busy and most have decent night life to keep everyone happy.
Just my ideas, but I’ve no kids to consider.
ExpresbroParticipantThanks for the input Paul… :D
We’ve been considering Rome and Mayo so far…and maybe London…but it’s nice to hear others ideas and experiences…
Cheers again
randomwayMemberI spent half year in Rome and didn’t get bored of it… it’s not the best time to visit in the summer though. The crowds combined with the heat is more stressful than relaxing in my opinion. Italian cities are the nicest in the autumn.
If you like isolation and places far from tourists, consider a ski resort in the Alps or the Dolomites… Slovenia comes into mind with a varierty of high mountains, amazing caves and even a few tidy mediterranean towns at the sea in the south.
guthrijParticipantNot as exotic as some of the other suggestions but my favourite spot in the UK. Good photography opps – Landscapes, Sea, Castles, Abbeys, Red Kite.

paulParticipantOh, Scotland is brilliant too. Out on the Isle of Skye is great. Plenty of things to see and photograph. Plenty of places to eat and drink too.
plainoldmeMembermayo is a good idea. I wouldnt say rome though, not for a week, there’s sooo much to do there-you’d never get it all done, even in an action packed week.
Germany? No? I’ve been to the BLack Forest region, Heidlberg to be exact, I was 16 when I went and my sister wasnt much older. i guess it depends on what you’re kids are interested in whether they’d enjoy it or not. Museums, palaces, and the largest pedestrian shopping area in europe. It’s a gorgeous place.…also really nice and warm during summer!
ossie13ParticipantrichiehatchMemberI’ll second Barcelona… a week there would be great…! As for Ireland… Donegal is great, as is Kerry, as is West Cork as is……… jasus I could go on… One place I haven’t been in years is up around the North coast. By the looks of it (ahemmmm Hannah, Dickey and McInroy), it looks stunning…!

PixelleMemberIceland, if the family is into walking, birds, mountains, icebergs, cliffs, geysers, etc.
Direct flights only for weekends though.
steelydanParticipantRome is a great place to visit, but I dont know about 12 & 15 year olds??? they might get bored with the history. I would say Barcelona myself as you have the big theme park Portaventura about 20 minutes outside (near Salou) Depends on what the youngsters are into? London is great the sterling is getting better , Cornwall is nice and as far as I know theres flights into Plymouth from Dublin so thats not far from there.
DeeboParticipantAdd another vote for Barcelona, its a superb plavce. I would also maybe add in somewhere like Copenhagen, its a great spot too but a bit expensive. Even Austria would be good
My favorite place in Europe though in Prague, been there 5 times or so and love the place. Brilliant place, lots to see and do and lots for the kids to see and do
This year i am doing the same thing. I weeks holiday in Spain and a week travelling ireland. Planning maybe in going upthe antrim coast and staying a dew days up the top of ireland and then getting the ferry from magilliagan to green castle in Donegal, few days up that way and then head towards o,meath and then dublin and bray

AidanMParticipantA suggestion I have is a holiday my fiance and I took a few years ago. It was a driving holiday, we started in Shannon, and drove along the west coast stopping at Lahinch, Galway, Clifden, Leenane, and Westport. Lots of things to do, and things to shoot, trips to the Aran Islands etc. Spectacular, and not just for the pictures.
wayneleoneMemberFlorence, Italy is a great place for both the photographer and the family.
joe_elwayParticipantAs a people shooter, I reckon you’d like Italy Robbie. Someone mentioned Skye above. I was hoping to go there last Spring but things didn’t work out timing-wise. Was po’d about that. Ireland: Kerry except for when it’s full of tour busses. I think Mayo or Donegal would be places I’d like to visit that I haven’t been to yet.
