New EOS 5D approaching?

Just wondering if the new 5D is any closer. I received an e-mail from calumet today advising that the 40D is reduced in price even further:

    Body only:

    Regular price: £700
    proce-drop: £81
    Cashback: £100
    Net price: £519.

    Kit price (incl. EF-S 17-85): £709

Or is it an April fool’s joke?

The single lens kit price on Jessops is £719 after rebate, so I guess not. I had been waiting on the 450D, but the kit price is about £690, so may aswell pay the extra for a 40D.

I have the 40D and am very happy with it.

I heard rumours that the 5D replacement is due to be released April 22, but that doesn’t make sense to me, otherwise, why would Canon have a 5D rebate program on at the moment which lasts well into the summer? My reading of the situation is that the rebate program is designed to encourage 5D stock depletion ahead of a replacement to be announced at the worlds largest imaging trade show, Photokina, in September.

There is a lot of photos to be made until then and the new 5D will be more expensive and much harder to find in shops… if you have an other body that you can use until then, it’s a no brainer to wait, otherwise I would think the 5D is an excellent tool for many things, and it will be for years still.

Geezzz I hope its not too much longer for the replacement of the 5D… a teacher of mine told me it was going to be about 6-8 months and this was at x-mas time. I’ve been waiting forever and am getting anxious on owning a digital camera. Film + Processing is expensive and then I have to scan it. I really love my medium format camera… I wish the Mamiya 645ZD was cheaper.

For those of you with the 5D… I’m curious… how big of an image can you print out without losing detail and gaining pixels?? I’ve only printed film and participate in group shows from time to time. So, my main concern is will I still get a quality print (16×20 on up) from a 5D??

    Thanx

can get a print bigger than 16*20 comfortably from my 40d, i use an epson 7800 printer

think the largest i have done is 30*20 and it looks great

If print size and retaining lots of detail is an issue, consider stitching, which doesn’t have to necessarily end up as a panorama. So long as the subject isn’t moving about too much (though preferably not at all!), it’s fairly straightforward.

As Steve has pointed out though, you’ll already easily get large prints from a 40D or a 5D. If you weren’t to interpolate the image at all, you’d still get a 200dpi 20×16 or thereabouts from a 40D. Also, if price is a concern, the 5D 2.0 will most likely be pretty expensive for the first six months or so of its existence

I honstly wouldnt worry about print sizes, Ive printed 48″x31″ on my D3, its perfect, printed at 200dpi (it doesnt need to be any more because you wont be standing close to it when looking at it)
I know of people printing 30″ images with a canon 10D

People really dont give digital camers enough credit for their print size capabilities.
I mean sure they are not going to match a 5×4 or 10×8 sheet of film, but they are coming dam close to matching medium format.

I’m new to digital so… maybe I should just get the 5d thats out now … with the rebate I can get the body for $1,900 thats not too bad. does anyone have any idea on what the changes are going to be on the upgrade?? Would it be worth it for me to wait? and would the price be double?? Im just really anxious on getting a digital and like I said my main concern is the output size.

Thanx for the info, it is appreciated! :D

Found on Amazon – Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital Field Guide (Paperback)

Draw your own conclusions (although I’m sticking with a release date to coincide with Photokina in the autumn (23-28.09.08))

I have been monitoring dpreview, my plan is to get a 5D but was happy that PI was a refuge from 5D rumours :)

I am trying to suppress the notion that gear is the answer, but it does seem to produce great results. And having to make compromises on focal length of lenses is a pain (I have a 400D) if you believe that eventually Canon sensors will mostly be 35mm size in the future.

Also when it comes out there is the question of whether to wait and see if any major problem emerges, as with some top dollar models like the canon 1D and leica M8.

My thoughts are with you in these uncertain times

I have never been an early adopter and I’m not likely to be either, especially with something as expensive as digital photography kit. I always like to wait around six months after the release of a new camera before making a decision on whether to buy or not. By then, most of the serious issues, if there are to be any, will have come to light and as well as that, the price will invariably have come down a little, so I think it’s worth waiting that little bit extra. And, you might just grab yourself a really great second hand bargain on a used 5D once the MkII hits the streets. :D
