I hope this is in the right category and you don’t mind my asking this.

I am hoping to do a charity calandar (2009) for our diocese to help raise funds for our annual Lourdes pilgrimage. (I travel as a helper myself) The diocesan pilgrimage is in June every year.

I am hoping to get lots of shots myself when in Lourdes on this pilgrimage and as its a special Jubliee year I thought it might be a nice momento as well as helping to raise funds as well.

However, I am hoping that maybe some of you might have done a project like this before and could recommend where I could get calandars printed and your experiences so that I could do some costings etc before I put the idea to our Pilgrimage Director.

Any help and tips gratefully appreciated.

    Hi Helen,

I moved the post here so that it’d get more attention.

For a local/area calendar, I’d say get in touch with local printers to see if they’re interested in getting involved.
As the calendars would be bought from people in the area, the advertising they’d get out of it would be very useful, I’d have thought.

    Worth a shot…

Is there a particular theme? Are you looking for photographs of a certain type/location? Do you want some from the PI members?

    Hi Helen,
good project!! There are loads of places online you could get the printing done, like snapfish or photobox etc
even Jessops will do this kink of thing but I think like Mark says the local printers would be the best option,
I would ask them if they would like to ‘come on board’ as a sponsor and maybe see if you could get the
    printing done for cost price.

    Just a suggestion.

    Sinead.

Helen, the cheapest printing in Ireland (well nearly) is from Walsh Colour Printing in Kerry. In my previous life as a graphic designer I used then to print many calendars, most with wire spiral binding. Cost wise they’ll beat the socks of online printers.

They may do the artwork for you as well.

My contact there was Pat Fogarty and their number is (066) 714 2179,

    cheers

I’ve also heard that Walsh Colour Printing are a good crowd to deal with.
Was mentioned by someone (Eddie?) when I brought up doing a PI charity calendar.

Worth a call I’d say Helen

Thanks for all that everyone, lots of great help and information.

The theme will be Lourdes itself. I hope with help from another friend to take shots of various places in Lourdes – or at the cermonies (when we are there on pilgrimage) and maybe out to Garvenie as well.

The idea is that will be a keepsake for pilgrims and the invalids who travelled with us in 2008 and also to help raise funds for next years pilgrimage.

Thanks for all that info everyone. This is great!

This is a bit off-topic till you get to the end of the post…

I was going to do a calendar for a local charity.
Then I watched a late night tv program 2 weeks ago on people who had made some of those calendar Girls type calendars in England.
One or two came out a few years ago followed by a raft of 200 or more different calendars each year.
It’s a moneymaker for some people and one lady made over 16,000 pounds for her charity.
(disregarding the subject here its the principle …)
However many of those who made Charity Calendars ended up with a calendar they couldn’t sell and were stuck with all the printing costs and a garage full of out of date calendars.

The main reason was that they had not thought out how they were going to sell the calendars.
Shops & Garages might take a few but thats not enough to make a calendar a worthwhile project.
The lady who made some serious money involved the whole of her community – yes the whole town ! as a sales force and they barnstormed the county selling the calendars to almost everyone they met.

When I went to to Lourdes I was very touched by the heaps of discarded crutches, wheelchairs etc from cures that had been made there

I wouldn’t want to see you making a loss on the Lourdes project
So Please make sure you have a marketing plan for your Lourdes Calendar before you even leave to photograph it.

A calendar sounds like a moneymaker but many UK people ended up with big overdrafts doing it.
Maybe getting an agreement from the charity about who finances it would be a good idea.

Look up Fairprint they have sevral factories in the UK and have one of the biggest press’s in the UK they are very cheap, very fast and very friendly.

They were half the price of my cheapest local firm on a batch of album covers i done last year. Well worth a call.
