Irish Downhill (slow sync, first sports post, not pretty)

Still trying to get to grips with this slow sync on camera flash carry on.. think it works better for gigs than sports stuff to be honest
but sure, it’s worth giving it a go I think.
Took these this morning in Rostrevor (went out with the idea of taking pictures in the snow, but it was all gone by the time I got my
self out there). It was the first round of the Irish Downhill Racse Series (I think).C&C welcome.

Sinead.It was indeed the first round of the NPS Sinead. I was down yesterday but didn’t make it today. You’ve caught some good action here. Slow speed sync is great for action. It works best if you follow the rider – this keeps the rider sharp and will blur the background. In these shots it is somewhere in between. Try shooting in M mode with the flash on/popped up. You can easily control how bright the background is compared to the rider, and then have the flash freeze the action.
The eyes are superb in the third.
I found Rostrevor very tricky to get good angles with clean backgrounds – the forest is very dense for most of the track.

I ordered a sb800 so that will help I think.Yep, Rostrevor is pretty dense makes it dark in the trees, flat light.
I find holding the camera really close to the ground at an angle and not looking through the
viewfinder produces lots of different angles.. lol.cheers,

I’m just feeling my way around the whole slow sync thing, trying to be creative.

Its good to see art-sport images, most sport photographers look for a new angle, you have done this very well.
It almost looks like the first is on second curtain sync, but the second 2 are on first curtain? The trails are in front of the image, and not behind?
10 out of 10 for creative – it can be very tempting to get the “safe” shot.Keep it up!

I’m only scratching the surface with this technique, loving it though.
The less equipment you carry the more creative you can be (I think anyway).
I don’t think I could have managed a safe shot Merv, and I used different flash
settings.. So maybe first and second curtain?Sinead.
