Some advice please

I’ve bought a Canon EOS 5D camera recently. The deal on ebay was for the body only.
I’ve always had an interest in photography, especially sports photography, but have decided to take it up more seriously.I would be grateful for some advice on what lens to buy for it. Maybe one for standard portraits shots and one for sports?
Thanks in advance

guthrijParticipantIf you want to shoot portraits then you are looking to cover the range 70 – 100 mm. For sports (field games etc.) you will need a minimum of 200 mm. The lenses to buy really depends on the budget available. There are endless combinations, the following are just suggestions or options. Other users would almost certainly suggest alternatives.
Top End: EF 85 mm f1.2 L Mk II, EF 100-400 mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM. These two would cost about €2800.
Mid Range: EF 28-135 mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM (28 mm end would be good for landscapes), EF 400 mm f5.6 L USM. These two would cost about €1200.
Budget: EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM, EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM. These two would cost about €800.
Bottom End: EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. (€450)
These are very approximate prices. Have a look at 7dayshop.com. They are reliable and competitive.
You can also consider Sigma alternatives. One lens I do suggest just for a “walk about” lens is EF 50mm f/1.8 II (AKA “Plastic Fantastic”). 7dayshop have this for £70 (€80). You could pick one up cheaper on eBay.
Also check out this eBay seller for good prices on Canon gear. He has the 50 mm 1.8 for £55. He is first rate and very reliable.

Good luck.

pleaderMemberPeteMcDMemberThere are many options available to you as John has said.
Another option is a Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS along with a 1.4x convertor. Covers all the portrait lengths and gets you close to 300mm for sports. About £1200.
OnLookerParticipantI use the Canon 70-200 f2.8 for Sports along with 1.4 extender but mostly shoot at 200mm.
Have a look at my flickr for some of my pics (http://flickr.com/photos/chrislynam)
paulParticipantThe 70-200mm f/2.8 is a very commonly used lens for sports and is also brilliant for portraits.
Certainly well worth checking out that lens.
Other than that, a good portrait lens is the 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8
jb7ParticipantI’m not sure you’d be happy with a 50mm for portraits on a full frame-
I wouldn’t be anyway-
not even on a crop camera-Somewhere between 100-135mm-
though if you got that 70-200 2.8,
that could work…j
guthrijParticipantThe 70-200 2.8 IS is a great lens. I have one and am delighted with it. Combined with a 1.4x converter, it is a very compact sports system but on its own a bit heavy for portrait work.
