What lense should I get for a new Nikon 300D?help?

Hi, I was wondering what lenses (x2) I should get for a Nikon 300D.
I’ve decided to buy one to pursue a profession in photojournalism.
I need one zoom and one other.

Also if anyone has any suggestions for necessary accessories, I’m all ears :-)

I assume its the Nikon D300 your using here.

Maybe you should consider a fast telephoto lens,
(I don’t use Nikon so am not in the best position to recommend) and maybe a fixed focal length for portraits and the like.

If your only starting out, best suggestion I can make is give yourself plenty of time,
learn as much as you can, and buy the lens that feel right to you and fits your budget.

Good luck with your career in photojournalism, you’ll need lots of it.

If you’re just starting out, may i suggest you have a good look at the Nikon D80. The D300 is aimed at the pro and semi-pro and will probably be a little scarey to someone just starting out.

Re: lenses. I’m not overly familiar with the Nikon/Nikkor lens line up but you will need something like 28-105 f2.8 and Sigma 70-200 f2.8 or a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.0 Note that the Sigma 70-200 will not have VR on the Nikon’s, I think Nikon do a 70-200 f2.8 VR, but it’s fairly pricey. Sigma version, although not VR, is a very good piece of glass.

It really depends what you’re gonna shoot.

For PJ you’d be wanting the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR and another wider zoom – something like the Nikon 17-55 2.8. Neither are cheap – but you get waht you pay for. The Sigma 70-200 2.8, and the Sigma 18-50 2.8 or Tamron 17-50 2.8 are good alternatives.

It might be a good idea to hire a couple of lenses just to try them out,
then decide after putting them through their paces…….just a thought!

I didn’t mention in my initial post that I will be purchasing the Nikon D300 as well, granted, it’s probably going to be a steep and frustrating learning curve, but I’d rather grow into a camera, than be limited by its functionality.

    The above photo was taken with a Nikon D40x & a 200mm lense. 1/650 ss, ISO 100, F11, focal length 200mm.

I think I’ve reached the limits of what it can do. Besides I was late returning the camera to my college photo lab and now the boss is pissed off with me; he mightn’t let me borrow it anymore.
It’s time I bought my first SLR.

The exchange rate for pounds sterling and Euros means I could get a reasonable deal in the North for a D300-compared to Dublin where the body requires a whopping 2k.

    One final question…

Where can I rent a lense?

Jon, check out http://www.cameraworld.co.uk and http://www.warehouseexpress.com for deals on the D300. Also, don’t think you’ll be restricted by the D80, it’s simply a stunning camera and will produce amazing results, and at half the price. If you have the funds to get a D300 go for it, I’m just suggesting that the D80 will be a very good investment too, which will leave you with more money to get quality lenses and of course a flash.

BTW: I’m not a Nikon D80 user so I’m not flogging that horse.

If you have a limited budget – rather then insisting on a D300 and then trying to save money by buying cheap glass – buy the D80 or even a used D200 and spend what you save on good glass.

I would certainly go for D200 and Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 VR rather than, for example, D300 plus 55-200mm VR.

Once you have a range of good pro quality glass – then think about a better body.

The Nikon 80-200 f2.8 is a super lens also (I have one). Its one of Nikon’s sharpest lenses
for alot less than the 70-200VR. VR is of course great, but many many photographers
managed without it for years too :) The choice is yours ;)

I agree with Oy, spend the money on the lens not the camera. I have the D200 and am not
considering upgrading to the D300 for a long time yet. Lenses are where the investment should
    be made.

    Hi there,

I would agree with some of the previous replys and suggest going with the D80 and get better lenes. I was at a talk by a pro PJ awhile ago and he said he buys the canon equivilent of the D80 rather than the more expensive bodies in their range and uses the money saved to buy better lenses
