Help me choose a camera please lads!?!?!

I’ve got a fuji s5700 at the moment. I like it, she’s a nice little camera and I’ve gotten a good few pretty decent shots with it. However, I want to upgrade to a proper DSLR…. I love macro stuff and I’ve been looking around. Gonna include a couple of links below but I’m just wondering how are these cameras on their own for macro. My fuji has a fairly good macro function of its own. Basically lads, I’m wanna know is there a macro feature on these cameras….. I know you can buy a macro lens but is there anything on the camera itself to start you off?

Also, I’m no not that clued up on lens etc…
What’s the difference in lens included in the 2 above? And what kinda shots would you use them for? Also, where would my money be well spent? Apologies for the ignorance but I’ve no clue of DSLR’s at all….Appreciate any advice at all lads….

With the current Euro / Sterling exchange rate you would be better off buying from the UK, much better deals and the Canon cashback offer is valid.

You will need a lens with a macro function. The lenses with the first option are not macro lenses. The camera (400D) has been upgraded by Canon to tge 450D. That means they are available for a discount because most new buyers will go for the latest version. If you have the money go for the 450D. Conn’s Cameras in Dublin have them for €750.

You can get them a bit cheaper from the UK but by the time you pay postage and take into account the hassle if there is a problem it is probably not worth buying from the UK.
You will need a lens. Conn’s have the body plus EF-S 18-55 F3.5-5.6 IS lens at €850. This is not a bad start out kit but would not be useful for macro work. You would have to buy a dedicated lens. I am not too well informed about macro lenses but I suspect something like the Canon EF 50mm F2.5 Macro Lens at €300 might be Ok.

I had a 400D as well. Its a super camera. The 18-55mm lens is packaged with the camera. It covers a useful range, but it is not a macro lens – you wil not be able to get nearly as close as with your Fuji. The minimum focus distance is 28cm on the 18-55mm lens, compared to a couple of cm with your fuji.
A better alternative for macro is the Canon 60mm f2.8 macro lens. It will focus right down to lifesize – this means the subject will appear lifesize on the sensor.
THough it would be worth having the 18-55 kit lens anyway, for all it adds to the price of the package, for general shooting.

The finepix is a great camera, i had the S7000 and once i upgraded to DSLR i have not taken a macro shot even though this was my fave type of shots. the reason being that macro lens are fairly expensive and i have yet to buy one. I reckon you should get a camera which suits your budget but leave room for a marco lens like the sigma 105 or 150 . Or even keep the finepix for macro shotsDee
This is worth checking out. Just about all you need as an intro to DSLR photography. 9000 actuations is nothing. There is plenty of life left in the shutter.

Don’t know whether you have already bought your camera and lens yet.
I use Nikon but my sister shoots Canon for her art and she uses a Sigma macro lens, not sure which one 105mm I think
Anyway you can see some of her work n her websiute
Gives you an idea of what the Canon Sigma combo can do.
I don’t know how she manupilates her images but they are all printed on X-ray slides.

Why buy a 400d when a 40D is only a little more expensive??? I would recommend that if you are a canon person, otherwise a Nikon D300 is a bad ass camera, Huge tonal range, great iso range, low noise, a real sweet deal.
I would say its better a 400D with a decent lens then a 40D with a crappy one…

For a beginner to DSLR (also coming from a Fuji – a 5000) I find the Live View on the 450D great when composing the shot in manual mode. You can see the effect of the adjustments before you shoot. I’ve become quite proficient at it after 6 weeks and couldn’t live without it. I take the actual shot with the eyepiece, except when shooting with a tripod.

Yeah when i say 400D I include 450D ;) its all good, also a matter of size too…
In the end i would suggest to go to a shop and try them in your hand and you will see what it feels right on you…

Macro’s my fave kinda stuff too, would be perhaps silly to buy a DSLR only to use the s5700 for my fave type of work??
I guess best thing I can do is hold off buying the canon til I can afford to buy a good macro lens along with it…. :wink:On another note guys, What exactly is Sigma? Is it a universal lens type or what? Hate to be so ignorant but I have to ask….
Are they a lower cost alternative to an original Canon lens for example?Also, relating to lens descriptions etc… – what do the numbers mean!?? eg, 105mm, 200mm, etc etc… What ‘number’ is suitable for what type of photography, if ye’s know what I mean? Is it a distance measurement or what? See loads of cameras advertised with various pieces of kits but I never know what it means….
