B&W sunset from Portstewart

B&W conversion. I’d really like ppl’s opinion of this one, it don’t really “work” in colour so converted it and tried to add some drama and character to it. Some of the comments I’ve got on another forum really surprised me, and I’ve had an “enquiry” from a popular “establishment” regarding getting it printed BIG, granted they did see it in print form and it does look better in print. I’m a little surprised.
Ppl’s opinion on a postcard please….
andy mcinroyParticipantBrian,
B+W sunsets don’t usually work but this is an example of one that does. I still have this perverse desire to see it in colour though.
The foreground is cracking and very well arranged. Perhaps a little bright to the left would be my only quibble.
Andy
Brian_CParticipant…..in colour!!
I know what you’re saying about it being too bight on the LHS, but I woulda said the exact opposite, it’s too dark on the RHS. Whether I darken the left or brighten the right would drastically change the mood of the shot thou.
ST ColinMemberLooks much better in colour for me! Colours really pop and there’s a good depth to the whole photograph. Not that the B&W version isn’t good either…
Is this a single exposure?

Yip it’s just the one exposure, no HDR going on here.
jb7ParticipantI like it better in colour-
however, I think a crop might help-
a little off the left,
to get a little more tension between that rock and the frame…j

Excellent Brian, nice work.
RobertoMemberI like both!
The b&w is more dramatic and the colour version is more ‘sunsety’.
Brian you are right the RHS is dark but only in the colour version…. IMO.BMParticipantThe colour one is just great. well done.
Just read Andy’s interesting article on preparation and research – any of that ging on here?
mgstParticipantPixelleMemberMy vote’s for the colour version. I particularly like the effect of the orange light on the rocks, super.
SodafarlMemberBrian 2 great versions I personally like the B&W one best but is it too late for both to go into the exhibition. Don’t forget my invite.
Soda
RobMemberBoth versions look pretty good Brian, but I think the colour
just edges it slightly. Lovely composition too…Rob.
Brian_CParticipantBM: Defo no pre-visualisation going on. I took it last year when I was still “learning the ropes” as it were. I knew the location would be ideal for sunsets and I suppose I wanted rocks and fluffy water….. does that count as pre-visualisation??
Sodafarl: Has Trevor not mentioned it in the Monday nite class?? He said he’d pass the invite along. You and everyone you know is more than welcome to pop in on May 6th.
Thanks to all who replied, really great to get a range of opinion’s.
I still don’t know which one to pick for the exhibition, maybe both……
