Hi there firends. My knowledge of the technical aspects of photography is very low. However, I do consider it a hobby.

The camera I use is an EOS300 (which I’m sure is next to useless as far as many are concerned, but anyways….)

I have never used a digital camera and have no interest in doing so.

My experience is mainly in travel photography, in Ireland I mainly do landscapes. I only use colour film.

My main question is, does everyone who posts on this site use digital only? I have a distrust of digital still; and I don’t like the notion of photo manipulation, I think you snap it as you see it.

My second question is, having spent a lot on photography, I am only learning by doing (which is good) but it may also be good to learn by learning…..where is the best place to learn about the technical aspects of a camera, shutter speed, light reading etc…..

    Billy.

Don’t worry Liam lots of people on here use film as well and I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to share their expieriences with you.

Get stuck in anyways and you’ll get a lot out of the site.

    Brian….

    Oh and welcome

    Hi Billy…Liam…???

Welcome along. You should feel proud to be with film. I myself only got into this as a hobby through digital but film is the careful way.

You’ll find a lot of learning here and as Brian said there are quite a few film users here and if you stick with the site you’ll find some of the long term, consistent members are in the majority film users.

    Enjoy.

Digital is indeed the way to go, I fought the digital/film debate for sometime. anyway film is still alive and will remain so.
I use film, but not as much as I should, mainly for a C&G course. I use a Minolta 7000 film camera and have had Minolta Dynax 7, and getting one again shortly.

You could always scan and post some images up here.

    Welcome.

Trees are good – lots of interest here in trees – see the Landscape section.

Film and digital is an on-going debate – and one that I think is a lot healthier than previously. Some see many similarities – in that many film photographers manipulate images in the darkroon while digital photographers do so on a computer. For me it is the convenience – of not needing a darkroom or waiting to receive films and prints back from a lab. I simply lost patience with labs that always “flattened” my images – regardless of how I set up the shot and the instructions I provided to the lab.

I hope the debate will continue. Search out the B&W film photographs from Martin – he recently purchased a medium format film camera and is posting some great ones on this site.

You would also be surprised to learn how some film photographers also do a bit of digital manipulation – and how little is actually done in most of the better digital ones – see posts from irishwonkafan and NFL-fan for examples.

In any case, enjoy your time here. Plenty to learn and lots of debate to enter into.

Oh, and some of us post jokes in the General forum.

Hi Billy and welcome to PI.

On the film or digital thing..personally I’m interested in the image and I don’t particularly care where it came from, be it a 35mm film camera, a point and click digital camera or a top of the line Digital SLR or even a mobile phone!!

To me..it’s the image that matters.

    Enjoy the site
