I would like to know what is the minimum size a digital image can be in order to print a good quality A4 size print. Is 1500 pixels accross large enough or too small.
An A4 sheet of paper is 210x297mm. That’s 8.26″x11.69″.
It is generally accepted that optimal priting resoultion is somewhere around the 300 pixels per inch (ppi). You will get great results with less, such as 240 ppi, or even 210 ppi but going larger than 300ppi is pointless to be honest. But for simplicity, let’s stick with 300 ppi.
So, take your paper size of 8.26″x11.69″ and multiply each side by 300 which gives you 2480 x 3508 pixels. If your image is only 1500 pixels across, you just might be pushing things a little as that works out at 128 ppi. If you’re printing yourself at home, you might give a great program called QImage a try. Even if you’re not printing at home, this is a useful application to have as it does a great job where moderate resizing is concerned. I regularly use it and I’ve even used it to print off images downloded from the WWW with great success.
Thorsten is right about optimal resolution, but you can good enough results printing at 150 dpi, it really depends on what are your standards and what you want to do with the print. But even in that case 1500px is a bit too low. For A4 print 150 dpi your image should be 1754×1240.
