    HI.
Just wondering if anyone has advice?

Recently purchased camera from Uk site and wondering how I would go about claming back Vat as I’m registered for here.

    Thanks orla.

I guess it’s no different to reclaiming Irish VAT provided you have a full VAT receipt. You’re best bet is probably to check with your accountant.

you can’t put this on your Irish VAT3 form. You have to complete a VAT65 from HM Customs. Make sure you read the requirments before sending it off. I think you have to send them receipts and registration details of the company you purchased from.

If you are VAT registered you should have declared this when you purchased the items and quoted your vat number. The EU company that you then purchased from would ship the goods VAT free. I have found in the past that certain UK suppliers still want to add VAT on to my purchases even though I am VAT Registered. This is against EU regulations and I sometimes have to force the issue.

Thanks for the clarification Gerry. I was thinking that might have been the case alright, but I’ve often seen UK suppliers make statements suggesting that buyers need to claim the VAT back themselves. Not being VAT registered myself, I’m not 100% in the know about these things yet.

    Thanks for the advice,

just downloaded the Vat 65 form, seems straighforward enough.

    Cheers,

you should’nt have paid vat in the first place as there is no vat on export from the uk once u are regestered here, now that u have paid it ur are entitled to claim it back as you would normally do in ur returns.

    Really !!

The few times I did pay it in the past I got nothing back as it was not paid in Ireland and I was more or less told to try and claim it from the country of orign. They may well have changed the policy over time. Whats the procedure for doing this as I see there is no provision on the “VAT 3” or the “RTD EUR” forms for this. (Of course the RTD EUR form is only a declaration of where you made your imports/exports from/to). I have also gone through “The Guide To V.A.T.” and can’t find anything there. Am I missing something? It could be very handy to know.

Simply give the dealer your vat number and thats it, could’nt be simplier, then he dosn’t put vat on the invoice.

You can’t reclaim foreign VAT in Ireland.

As has been stated, if you’re VAT registered in Ireland, Quoting your Vat No ( include IE on front of it ) is sufficient to have no local VAT included on the invoice.

If you’ve paid VAT as above in any EU Country, you have two options basically.

    1. Get the supplier to issue you a credit note and refund of the VAT incorrectly charged. (preferable).
    2. Get a refund from the country’s tax authority.

In some countries option 2 above can take quite a while, though it will eventually be repaid.

    T.
