Below Benbane – Northern Ireland’s most northerly point

Tonight I clambered down a gully to stand on an outcrop of rock below the mighty Benbane head.

This is the most northerly point in mainland northern ireland.

Very isolated. No mobile phone signal. No people.
Just hexagonal blocks like at the causeway, but here they are the size of minis.

love the first Andy. More life in this than the other two pics. Must have been a nice sun set this evening.

I really like the first one Andy, especially the warm light on the underside of the clouds. The third shot really shows the height of the cliffs well – I don’t think I would have made it back up the gulley!

    Superb shots.
#1 stands out for me here. Great sunset.

Three lovely shots. # 1 definately has the best combination of colour and composition, but I really like the warm tones of #3.

Yes the first one is the strongest of the three. Looks a great place.

    Thanks guys,

I’m still working to get the colour right on this one. But here’s a view of the mighty Bengore head which is not often seen from below. There is an amazing lava pavement below it.

    Good stuff Andy.
No.3 appeals to me for its originality.

I haven’t looked at my shots yet – I went to Inch and only got a few photos between showers.

#1’s very good Andy, though if I were to be greedy and ask for my cake and eat it too, some of that lovely warm light of #2 on the foreground rocks would be the icing

Andy all three are fantastic shots but love the light in no and the moody sky in no 2

    Thanks folks

Pete, Yes, the 3rd was taken with my 70mm prime. I must use it more often.

John, I’ll see what I can do. I have several taken before the sun set.

Outstanding Andy. I’m sorry I went by the weather forecast and cried off – I’ve been keen to get to Benbane since you spoke of it.

No. 1 is rightly receiving a lot of praise. There’s a real Northern Lights feel to it. I think it is probably beter in a larger size – to bring out the detail in the headland.

The light on the rocks in no. 2 is great. The sky is a bit menacing but undefined and the sea lets it down. Is there a loss of sharpness along the horizon at the left hand side?

The lighting along the base of the cliff in no. 3 is great – teh way it bounces off the breaker. The scale of teh cliff is impressive. The sky is a bit burnt. I’d say a scary place to be in a bigger sea.

I’ve seen teh view fo no. 4 before – but from a boat! This place is quite rarely visited. Great sense of drama in it. Hard to get a sense of scale – albeit that I don’t like artificially-positioned foreground “interest” just to give a sense of scale. Aain, the enlargement might provide that.

So, a worthwhile night out. I went into town and bought books about the walk from Port to Ardara. Get your Trangia out, it’s going to be an expedition!!

Thanks for posting. Always look forward to these on a Friday now.

Thanks for the thoughtful critique Brian. You always do a good job.

I’d say that this would indeed be an amazing place to be in a storm. I think you could actually photograph it quite safely as the approach is not exposed to the sea.

I’ll take another look at the 2nd. I have a feeling I might have I forgot to resharpen after the resize. Good spot.

A trangia? By gum that’s heavy. All we’ll need is a bivi bag (each) and a couple of Mars bars.

Bengore head looks like a mighty place it would be magical in the right light
