Dunseverick Harbour – B+W 110
-
SteveDParticipant
My new B+W 10 stop ND filter arrived today, and thanks must go to NFL for recommending it!
I went out tonight to experiment a little with the filter, and I did get one shot I am fairly happy with. Feedback very welcome! Do you think there is too much empty space on the LHS?
4 minute exposure, f14, 17mm, ISO100
Thanks,
SteveBrickeeParticipantRavenAshMembersean1098MemberANOTHER NICE SHOT STEVE, ESPECIALLY THE MOVEENT IN THE CLOUDS. IMO THE LEFT SIDE IS WELL PROPORTIONED. THE LONG SHUTTER SPEED HAS EVENED UP THE EFFECT OF THE WATER NICELY.
GREAT WORK,
SEAN.
HelenMParticipantandy mcinroyParticipantVery nice indeed.
A great effect and boy do you have patience. I particularly like the movement in the clouds in this shot.
Having looked through the filter I can appreciate the difficulty involved.
A superb end result.

ossie13ParticipantSteve excellent shot, great composition……………………..I must put one of those filters on my Santa list
Cheers Steve
nfl-fanParticipantNice one Steve… super looking effect… the night I tried mine the tide was out and there wasn’t really any considerable movement in the water… but this… this is excellent… you have inspired me to get out testing again that’s for sure!
Can I ask what time in the evening you shot this at Steve? My exposures weren’t nearly as long. It does require a lot of patience alright between taking off the filter, composing, calculating your exposure, putting the filter back on, putting the camera into bulb mode and then timing the exposure.
thanks must go to NFL for recommending it
I might add that it was carrigman that first spurred my interest in this filter along with many conversations with irishwonkafan about the filter so credit to the two lads on that one.
Nice work.
cathaldParticipantSuper job Steve i think the shot is well balanced and the sky looks great
4 min exp i would have to sit down and have a smoke when waiting on that oneCathal
DeeboParticipantLovely shot and I checked these filters out too. The cloud movements are excellent and bring a good form of drama to the image
If I come back from holiday next week with any Euro left I will be having one of them too. Great findBMParticipantSteveD wrote:

Absolutely not. You don’t want to lose any of that sky. I love teh “misty” aspect to the sea. All in all very appealing.
Now, where’s my old welder’s mask …
Anybody esle interested in one of these filters? We’ll see about a bulk purchase price.
Alan RossiterParticipantNice work Steve. I had a different agenda with one of these filters but this looks like a certain target over the coming days. And the empty space adds to this image Steve – it gives it a bit of contrast to the rocks.
I bought a P156 Cokin filter that does a similar job. It pulls back 13 stops but the only difficulty I expect to encounter is the reflections of the internals of the lens. I have it nearly 2 weeks but between one thing and another I have only tried it once and over calculated the stops from 16 seconds to 64 seconds so I’ve a lovely white image. Beware of the reflections if you go down this route though as the filter is not anti reflective. The ND-110 probably is given the price.
Another pointer is to block off the view finder – I found this to let in 3 stops of light on the SonyA700 which will feck up your calculations.Alan
lousyParticipantThis effect is really nice and worthy of the time consuming efforts.
Lovely shot.Pat
SteveDParticipantThanks for much for all the feedback folks, I really appreciate it.
NFL – I don’t have the exact time on me now (will PM you it later), but it would have been sometime between 19:30 and 20:30. The sun was high in the sky and blasting through a gap in the clouds behind me, so it certainly wasn’t a ‘low light situation.’ I also had my polariser attached, so I was probably using about 12 stops of ND in total. I think that without the filters it would have been an exposure in the range of about 1/60s or so. Without the polariser it would have been 1 minute I think.
Wonka – I have had the same problem with my Lee Polariser when shooting into the sun. I’m not sure there is any way to stop that, but making sure that the filter system is set perfectly parallel to the lens surface helps.
nfl-fanParticipantAh I see… I was getting 1 min exposures around the same time but with the addition of a polariser it goes up to 4 mins! Cheers Steve.
