MartinParticipant
Was going through my Norway shots from Feb. Came across these two. Let me know what you think if you like them at all. Think no 2 is the stronger of the two?
These are B+W conversions from colour shots on the Nikon D200
M
cathaldParticipantStunning as usual Martin i like both but prefere no2 with the closer crop
What they like in colour?Cathal
GARYNHParticipantMartin – I think I prefer No.1 – there is a nice relationship between the forground roak in the bottom left, the big round in the middle and the rocky top of the hill.. nice diagonals. They maybe slightly over sharpened, but then Im viewing on my laptop to it meybe just this damn screen.

BrickeeParticipantjb7ParticipantI like everything about these pictures Martin,
except for the boulder in the middle-Though you can take comfort that mine is a minority opinion-
j
SeaviewParticipantI’m slightly with jb7 on these, I’m not gone on the boulder in number two but I think number one looks great.
You might be so kind as to show the colour version. Again great mountain shots, you can nearly feel the cold and the wind.Dave.
MartinParticipantThanks for the comments all,
GARYNH: Thanks for the feedback on the sharpening. I think the sharpening is ok. I sharped these with an action i have recorded that sharpens using lab colour. I have been using this action for about a year and have always been happy with it. I’ll see if anyone else says anything thanks for pointing it out
jb7, Seaview: Thanks for the comment on the big rock. Hadn’t thought about what the picture might have looked like without it. When taking it i remember i was trying to use the rock. I think without the rock this could be better, thanks for the good feedback
cathald, Seaview: Colour version below. This is the colour shot (2nd shot) i had to work with after raw conversion.
Thanks again all
MGARYNHParticipantAs I said Im viewing this on a dodgy laptop, the screen is really to contrasty and the DR is really bad……
I will view again on a better monitor later on.Gary H
MarkKeymasterGARYNHParticipantMartin, I had another look this morning on a calibrated monitor – as suspected the laptop screen is not good for looking at these images.
You are right on the sharpening, just right, nice range of tones in No.2. Really prefer the B&W version, very atmospheric.
Care to share your sharpening actions? I use LAB mode as well.. but I havnt been able to develop an action that will cover all or indeed most images in any satisfactory way.Gary H
BeamCatcherParticipantHiya Martin! :-))
In my humble opinion… The sharpening not close of giving the image the justice it deserves. -Don’t want to come across negative, but it really does look overdone. I am all for work in PS and similar, but think it would be good to experiment with the sharpening. Perhaps even selective sharpening, where you do different sharpening on stone in foreground + the rest in two layers… then combine. -Even 250-330% with 0.3 pixels radius would do wonder in that respect.
Of the two shots, I like the last of the B&W best. The eye seem to wonder better from foreground to back via the white. -I do think you have pulled a bit hard on the handles with regards to levels on white though. :-))
Anyhow… I admire when folks go for decent walks and drag their camera with them…Kudos man! ;-)
Where ’bouts in Norway were you… I am from Norway and pop back for a week now.
Cheers and speak soon!
Ivar :-)
PS! Here is a shot from back home by a friend of mine in my local photo club.

DeeboParticipantGood shots Martin., second for me too. It looks better exposed to me.
Great shot Ivar, would love to see the northern lightsDee
MartinParticipantThanks again for the feedback
BeamCatcher: “The sharpening not close of giving the image the justice it deserves. -Don’t want to come across negative, but it really does look overdone”
This is an 800pixel wide picture. When going to print I normally have TIFFs correctly sharpened to different sizes. For the web I just do a quick sharpen using a generic action I have recorded.
BeamCatcher: “I do think you have pulled a bit hard on the handles”
Yea possibly right would agree. The whites on the right of the image have gone a bit too far especially because the sun is off the right and I have no detail in the raw file so tried to make that area as less blown out as possible with levels and highlights. I’ll have another go at the post processing of this image from the start, thanks for your feedback
BeamCatcher: “Where ’bouts in Norway were you.”
Was in a place called Rjukan in central southern Norway (The place they were making the heavy water during World War 2).
Thanks again all
