Right think i’ve done enough commenting for the evening :D time for some posting. My thesis is due Friday and i just finished editing all the pics today so I thought i’d give you guys a sneaky peaky, what an honour i know
So as you can probably guess I did a photography project looking at traditional trades and crafts and the older shops in dublin and ireland. I have 43 images going into the final project but i’m sure you’ll agree there’s scope for many many more. I barely skimmed the surface of this topic and it’s something I see as being a bit of a grand project for me, perhaps something I could get published as a nice big coffee table book on Ireland’s old business’ and trades etc. Met some lovely and very interesting people along the way and I really enjoyed the experience. Documentary photography is something i’d love to get into, as my avatar subtley suggests :)
Anyhoo here’s the best pics from the project, hope you enjoy them.
MartinOCParticipantThese are really great; great idea and execution. I was going to pick out my favourites but they are all great.
Good look with the course, and the career (hopefully not a paparazzo  ), you have the talent for it
I’ll be looking out for the book…. and I might have a nose around some of these places when I’m next back in DubMartin
HelenMParticipantHow fascinating – go for the book! I’m sure a publisher would be keen on the strength of these alone. You have really captured the personality of these men (and yeah, where are the women?) and I could look at these for ages – so much to see in each photo! The best of luck with your submissions.
Thanks for sharing these Sancho.jb7ParticipantMartinParticipantClass set of pictures, really well done, some of the best pics in the documentary section in a long while
Best of luck
Mnfl-fanParticipantExcellent… really excellent.
Enjoyed looking at all the photographs and reading the commentaries.
You’d turn on RTE or TG4 from time to time and you’d see the odd documentary filmed in the 70’s about Horse Drawn Carriage Makers (based in Enniscorthy but closed down now), Shoe Makers and Suit Makers and I always enjoyed them.
Great, great, stuff.
plainoldmeMemberAbsolutely brilliant set of photos here. Each of them excellent in quality and subject. Great to see Charlie Byrne in there too – The man who gave me my first guitar a decade ago!!
ossie13ParticipantExpresbroParticipantThese are really wonderful…and I for one would buy the book if you ever get around to it.
Well taken photos showing the subjects in their work environment and nice concise bio’s for each.
Be great to see more of these when you have them.
Top marks
Robbie
8)SANCHOMemberAwww you guys, i’m all blushing reading those comments
Thank you all so much for the kind words, it’s really appreciated, especially given the talent on this site. I could spend the rest of my life doing this, the main thing holding me back at the moment is I can’t drive so I rely on public transport to get me around but it’s actually been pretty good. I got to Kildare and back in less than 4 hours yesterday and got 4 shots in the process :D I’d love to travel the world and do the same in other countries, so basically National Geographic please :oThanks a million again guys, huge smile on my face right now :D
nfl-fanParticipantMuch effort involved explaining to the people involved what you are doing and any resistance?
SANCHOMemberSANCHOMemberThat’s pretty much all of them.
nfl-fan:
There were a few who didn’t want their picture taken so I took their co-workers instead. The only one to outright refuse was the old fella in The Irish Yeast Company, he’s sick of people coming into ask him about the place so he just handed me a piece of paper with the history etc. on it. Other people I had to chase a bit and keep coming back to them but that was fine becuase they have jobs to do and I didn’t want to be disturbing them, this project is about respecting these people after all. Other than that it went pretty smoothly, most people were more than happy to talk to me and be photographed. When I started out I had the intention of comparing the modern with the old, i.e. get a photo and interview with Wests jewellers and then contrast that with one from say Swarovski or something like that. But after trying to go that route for a few days I had enough of “You’ll have to get in touch with our PR department and they’ll provide you with some images” or just “No photography allowed on the premises”. So yeah that was annoying to say the least but it also gave me another angle to my project, the cold uncaring profit hungry modern world and the kind and thoughtful old world. I’m sure i would have found some modern shops happy to talk ato me and take a picture but after trying several i just gave up.
plainoldmeMemberTypo on the John Mangen image – i presume it meant to read “Marlay Park”?
This is absolutely great, as I already said, I could spend hours re reading this! And I think it would make an amazing book!
RobMemberExcellent set, very well put together with the bios. Some real
quality photographs there. You should do very well with this…Rob.
