After a unfortunate accident last night the road racing legend died in hospital. As far as I know his bike seized in the first half lap of the 125/250/400 practice session.
I would like to pay my respects to his family and friends.
Sean,
Brian_CParticipantI heard about the accident on the wireless and then looked at the Teletext before going to bed, stunned.
A great loss, a great rider, a great guy.
Jim LeeParticipantLast century, black and white film and no motordrive….this is possibly the best photo I have ever had the privilege to capture…
Joey and Robert at the Ballysally Roundabout on the NW200 circuit. Joey on the RC30 and Robert on the Norton. Gave both of them a copy but never got them to autograph one for me.
RIP the “Battling Brothers”sean1098MemberJim Lee wrote:

RIP the “Battling Brothers”Jim, noticed this picture on the News and thought what a great tribute pic, sad loss both of them.
FintanParticipantSuper photograph Jim thanks for sharing.
Sad time for the Dunlop family, God bless them.
jb7ParticipantRGH_PhotographyMemberWould just like to comment on the photo above, as MDCPhotography has said this would make a great tribute image but no doubt if it was made available to a certain kind of person it would probably be used for self profit as a few so called fans done after the death of Joey. Maybe if the image rights for such images were protected or given to the family to raise money for the foundation or other charities they wouldnt be exploited ?
I knew both Robert and Joey as I grew up just across the road from Robert and there is not much i can say about him that hasnt already been said on the news…. he was indeed the great man they say and probably the most selfless person i had the privilage to meet.
My thoughts and prayers are with his Mother, Louise, his boys William, Daniel and Michael and the rest of the family.
R.I.P Robert.

There were only 2 photographers on the outside of the “Ballysally” roundabout on the day. In Joey’s book there is an image of the two brothers taken a split second before this one and it is in the book published after his tragic death. I have never sold this image and have not received any financial reward for it and have given numerous copies for “auction” for numerous Road Racers fund raising nights.
I suppose I should have “Jim Lee Photography” watermarked on the image but it is me who has captured this moment in Motorcycling history and no financial reward would ever be enough to pay for the enjoyment that these two hero’s of mine have given to me.
Feel free to right click and “save as”….these two wonderful people didn’t ask anything from me to capture their moment of combat…but if you feel any twinge of guilt then send some form of appreciation, not for my ability to press a shutter, but to two “Irish” heroes who gave so much to us “mere mortals”RGH_PhotographyMembermaxParticipantjim super image, I have a few of Robert from Tuesday and Thursday nights practice! maybe post them later feel its a bit soon after the tragic accident??
