a beginner’s film?
-
GizzoParticipant
ok, it’s time for me to start the adventure with B/W film.
can anyone recommend me a good film to start with?
(the goal is to partecipate at some of the FPWorkshops… Fintan what’s the availability for August/Sept class?? :D )thanks!
FintanParticipantSend me your address and I will post you a free roll, is it 35mm or 120?
We have places, get shooting

That’s a classy little touch alright… nice one.
jessthespringerParticipantLovely gesture indeed, what jolly nice people film photographers are!!
Ilford XP2 400 is good if you don’t have the facility to develop yourself,
it’s a c41 process which means any lab that process colour film will be
able to develop it for you, they should be able to scan it onto cd for you
as well.Sinead.
FintanParticipantThanks for the comments folks we do like to look after our film friends
Anyway two rolls of complimentary Ilford 35mm enroute to Carlow, I hope you enjoy using them.
There is no real best film for a beginner, try as many as you can, perhaps settle on one or two then for a wee while. They all have slightly different charasteristics and a good way to see what is on the market is to visit http://www.silverprint.co.uk because 7dayshop only stock a selection.
Be sure and post plenty of threads here on Film Photography, aside from Peter and I there are loads of film people here that can help you.
Fintan
GizzoParticipantwell, what can I say?
thanks a lot! I am really surprised!
I will try the film as soon as possible, and meanwhile I will start looking for DarkRoom facilities around here!
and almost certainly I will join the workshop in Dublin!!!!thanks!
thefizzParticipantAs suggested, the C41 processed B&W film is a handy one to start with but it doesn’t have the grain or tonality characteristics of real B&W film. If getting real B&W film developed is a problem for you, remember that you don’t need a darkroom and very little equipment is required to develop yourself.
Our next introductory Darkroom workshop will probably be in August or September and this will cover the basics of film development and photographic printing. We may actually run that one in Portlaoise.
Peter
GizzoParticipantthanks to you as well Peter!
I have to admit that acutally I tried a roll in B/W before, a 400Tmax.
but I lacked in knowledge!
do you mean that this workshop is gonna be in Portlaoise?
mmm…. for me maybe it’s better Dublin. Don’t know. But I will check with the train eventually :)
Can’t miss it.thefizzParticipantYes thats the one but from last year. We have run them in Dublin so far and wanted to do the next in the midlands to make it easier for those not living near Dublin. We will of course be running more in Dublin. I’ll let you know when more dates have been set.
Peter
GizzoParticipantgot it Fintan.
highly appreciated. really.
now 6 frames of velvia, and I will put on the Ilford! I have a trip to Spain next month and what a better chance?see you at the workshop, then!
