I’m going to Rome tomorrow for a couple of days and was wondering is it wise to bring a 30D with all the horror stories I’m hearing about pick pockets and the likes.
    Any thoughts welcome ?

I’m sure if you have it around your neck and keep it safely guarded you’re note going to have a problem.

Pick Pockets like quick, easy, less obvious snatches.

I was in Rome five years ago and I also heard all the stories before I went. It’s a European capitol city the same as any other European capitol city when comes to crime. I had a great time over there and can’t wait to go back, it’s a beautiful city with photographic opportunities around every corner. You just have to be cute as you would be in any large city, if I was going tomorrow for a weekend I would bring my 400D.

Get wire-reinforced kevlar straps. They use razor blades and scooters to get away.

I’ve seen some great pic’s here and I’m not sure a borrowed Cybershot will live up to expectations…
A friend of mine told me to always carry a can of coke in a plastic bag for when u … eh are dehydrated  Could also have other uses

    hi there!
I am italian, (not from Rome though)
I have been there couple of times, with all my gear (80-200 included).
stories you’ve been told are real, unfortunately. but not so common.
my advice? bring your camera, but keep your eyes wide open, I think you can realize if a situation looks dodgy, can’t you?
maybe try to avoid the outskirts.

and ask for “bucatini all’amatriciana” in one of Trastevere’s restaurants.
perfect with a glass of Velleteri.

(ps I am not responsible if you loose your camera, I am just saying that it’s well worth taking this risk)

    Thanks for all the replys.
I think I’ll take the camera and as every1 said, just keep a watchful eye out for dodgy characters

And thanks for the restaurant Gizzo, I heard you have to go away from the tourist area’s to get good food

Seen a few times people walking around with a camera body and the lens missing, they bump into you and twist off the lenses and walk away. I always carry the camera in my hand (holding the lens) with the strap wrapped around my wrist tight

Come to Derry. I’ve never been mugged or had my pocket picked here.

I used to live in Rome and in my opinion it is a very safe city. I would risk to say, that it even feels too secure with a policeman on every corner. Be very careful on the metro and don’t go to the outer circles of the city at night… but that’s just if you are concerned. Rome is definitely much safer than Dublin…

Try to get to the Villa Borghese for a walk and to the hill called “Gianicolo”.. you will get a nice overview of the city, and there are less tourists than in the old centre. There is a lot to see though, you have to prepare your feet :)

Thanks for all the sound advice.

Martin: Sounds like the best option keeping the camera and lens in hand all the time

Hopefully I’ll have something that resembles a decent picture to post in a few days

Was in Rome a couple of years ago for a wedding, brother in law had his phone stolen by a young kid, while we were eating outside a restaurant, who must have been all of 6 or 7, just be aware and keep hold of your camera even when walking around!!

p.s. if you have a strap with those click off attachments, a cable tie around them is a good idea!!

Enjoy Rome it is a fantastic city and plenty of photo opportunities!!

    Cheers Steve
