Sunset on Building

duffaramaParticipant
I bought a new lens and this was one of the first photos I took with it and I love it, so thought I’d post it here.

nfl-fanParticipantIt does look a bit like a photo that was taken to try out a new lens… with no possible reason behind it other than testing. I could be wrong? Please do correct me if this is the case.
It has a couple of worthwhile qualities… like the warm light shining on the building and there’s something about that yellow box that works compositionally.
But if I was being totally honest… it does lack appeal to the passer by.
PitmaticMemberI did something like this not long ago but i was using a manhole cover in the foreground as i thought i liked the idea of the square mirrored in the building which is what i think your doing here
To stengthen this i would shoot this lower down to force the grid into the frame more and point down slightly so there is less sky or even better still watch out for the traffice and use half the grid so the building is more prominent.
The main issue with this though and i am not being critical is that the building is not exciting to me but i think more interesting shots could gotten by going up close
Just an idea

MartinOCParticipantI like this photo as I like simple forms and good colours, and urban topics.
The evening sun on the building, sandwiched between the dull sky and dark road works well but I think Mark is right. It would be good to work on the geometry, lots of interesting lines there, the box, building and lamp, with the strong perspective.
I think it would be worth a play around with, same time of day and a wet road again, with Mark’s comments in mind. But as you said, you love it, you may not want to change a thing.

duffaramaParticipantThanks for all the responses, I take it all on board!
I loved the light falling on the building and thought that this golden light made it seem a lot more special as a building as a result.
Regards composition, I know this needs to improve and quite often I take photos without taking any notice of my composition. It was only when showing this photo to someone else that I noticed the yellow box on the road and the squareness of them both.
I may return again for a sunset shot on a wet evening, if the summer is anything like last year I should get plenty of opportunities!
