Port Head Beach Sunset CoLouth(Added a shot with foreground)
-
MartinParticipant
Dont do many seascape sunset/sunrises but decided to go out this evening and give it a go. Had a nice sunset. Was nicest after the sun went below the horizon. Let me know what you think…

BrickeeParticipantmgstParticipantAlan RossiterParticipantLike Jim and Mick I agree – the colours and reflections are great. I can’t help wondering though should it need something in the foreground to give it depth. Even a rock. It does need something though to create that 3D effect.
Alan.
jessthespringerParticipantHmmm, I dunno Martin, I’m not sure, I like the reflections alright
but my eyes keep getting pulled off to the left, I think some fore
ground interest would have helped.Did you print this one?
Sinead.
nfl-fanParticipantMartin… can I ask a question:
How did you manage to get a sunset like this on the East coast… in a shot that looks like you’re facing North East.
The colour, sky and reflections are great. It was pee-ing rain in Wexford yesterday… cold, wet and windy. 120 miles up the road and you have this.
I posted something very similar a long time ago… colour and reflections… but as I suspected and had confirmed for me… the foreground was missing a defining element. Same case there… lots of beach but it’s all a little empty.
That being said it’s still a pretty good image… I’d be pleased to have a little life in the sky like that down around the WX.

irishwonkafan: Yes it possibly needs something in the foreground to anchor the shot or something. I just liked the colours and reflections so took the pick. I have others with foreground etc will look at these tonight and post if they are any ways good
Jess the Springer: Yea foreground as Alan said would have been better but just liked the look of the shot when I was walking around. Didn’t print this one yet will do so this evening. Will probably have to desaturate a small bit to get a good print from it. I should get something though with a bit more work
nfl-fan: “How did you manage to get a sunset like this on the East coast”. Waved my magic wand:-) only joking. Richie Hatch found this location. Port head beach on the eastern side is facing north. When the tide is out by walking out onto the beach and facing west you can get the sunset reflecting onto the sand, rocks etc. (see in above picture where the land is on my left and the sea is on my right) Have a look on the map of Wexford and see if you can see any land which is facing north. If you can find an area like this then sunsets might be possible in Wexford. The sun sets in the north west when it is getting nearer the longest daylight day of the year.
Thanks again all

jb7ParticipantBrian_CParticipantnice shot. Can I ask how you got that kinda purple tone. Is there any PP work going on here or is it just pot luck.
Lovely shot
MartinParticipantjb7: Thanks J
Brian_C: 95% of the PP was done in adobe raw conversion in CS3. Didn’t really use photoshop just the raw converter. Below are the setting I changed in RAW conversion:
vibrance +22
saturation +2
white balance 7250
HSL Tab set reds and oranges to around 10The purple cast then comes from the tint control on the Basic tab, I set this to around +23 on the image. This basically intensifies any purple in the image already so will only really work if the image contains some purple cast already, but you normally get this around sunset/sunrise times
Thanks again all
MFor those of you who wanted a bit more foreground interest see below: Possibly desaturated and darkened the bottom of the image a bit too much….
nfl-fanParticipantAh… #1 to suck us all in… and then #2… the masterpiece. The second is excellent… great colour, great mood and more foreground interest (nice texture and detail in the sand). Couple of dust spots to go… but other than that excellent.
RobMemberVery very nice images Martin, the original being the stronger
of the two for me. Sunsets on the East coast, who’d’ve thunk it..Rb=
BMParticipantI like the first one as it is – a lot. With no foreground interest and the almost symetrical reflection, it draws my eye to the centre very quickly – almost to the extent that I feel off-balance. The second is very well composed with remarkable colours and powerful contrasts. However, I think the clear foreground in the first makes for a more original type of shot – what we have come to expect from you, I suppose.
I would imagine that this would be great printed: you could stare into it for hours.
So, a break from castles, cows and boats. Sunsets by Martin. Looking forward to some more.
RavenAshMemberwesleylawMemberI prefer the first one. All the little stones give just enough of a texture to the beach to make it work. Then you have another dimension of a reflection as well. very nice.
