I will shoot a live show in a theatre this weekend. As I only did technical and dress rehearsals before, I am a bit concerned about the noise my cameras make. I will of course have my Mamiya 7 with me, which is very quiet, but I always found my D200 (the better tool for the job) too loud. I am thinking about buying a silencer or making one myself. Anyone has experience with such a thing or know a place where I could get one? I will walk around in Woddies DIY tomorrow to see what could I use, but I would prefer something more pro looking.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Just to go on with this monologue and help others who may have similar problems to overcome… I bought a water tank insulation package in the Woodies. I thought, it will be great, I can customize the shape, it is filled with rockfibre and pretty good for soundproofing.. The only problem is that the rockfibre is packed into nylon, and the plastic makes much more noise than my camera. Not good.

So after this incident I was thinking a bit, I took off my sweater, put the lens through one of the sleeves and wrapped the fabric around the camera a few times. The result is not bad, I think I found a good enough solution. The high-pitched shutter noise is dampened and it is now a much less obvious noise. Plus, the sweater will keep my hands warm :)

Still, if you have a better idea, please feel free to share!

Why don’t you just get some earplugs?

For the actors only or for the audience as well?

I love the sound of my camera, but somehow people find it distracting, when in the middle of the big silence (the best parts for photography because of the facial expressions and lack of movements) a big clap-clack sound comes out from the dark background.

Anyways, if I get negative critique in the end of the shoot, I will use the earplugs… :) Thanks for the input, JB.
