Linksys BEFSX41

Any network experts out there care to share their opinions on the Linksys BEFSX41? It seems you get quite a lot for your money.

I recently got a second PC to serve as my digital imaging PC and I swore I wouldn’t connect it to the internet, but I’m getting tired of having to switch my CAT5 cable from one machine to another any time I want to do a software activation or update. Photoshop and Windows allow one to do remote activation but Capture One 4.1 requires a live connection to the internet.

So, I figured I’d connect both machines at the same time through a router with firewall built in and that’s how I came across the Linksys BEFSX41. Given then fact that Cisco are behind the Linksys device’s it can’t be all that bad!

Opinions please! I’ve spent so much time researching monitors and PC’s and I’ve no intention of doing the same thing again for a router, of which there are a vast number of varieties out there, so I’m hoping someone else has already done the work for me

Q: I take it you currently have a Broadband router? Does it not have multiple network slots to plug in more than one CAT5 cable?

No, it’s a single ethernet connection coming off a WLAN receiver fitted to the chimney, hence the need for a cable router to facilitate the second PC.

    I bought a Netgear wireless router – DG834G 54Mbps around 18mths ago.
Can hard connect via cat5 or of course go wireless. So have a laptop which I
use once in a while with a Netgear USB WG111.
Also have a now redundant wireless Netgear game adapter which was used with a PS2 (now have PS3 which is wireless).

Jeez I also have a Netgear Media Device (think its mp101) for streaming music from my PC to a stereo deck.

Must get rid of some of these :)

I had looked at the Linksys gear at the time and it comes highly rated. Can’t recall why I went with the Netgear
equipment, but haven’t had any issues with it. Works a treat.

I use a BT Voyager 210 ADSL router at the moment and I have to say it’s one of the best routers I’ve had to date, rarely a problem… in fact… never a problem.

Whilst I’ve never used any CISCO products they are highly regards and used by many large corporations, so I’d say you can’t go wrong.

Mark, you’re obviously a Netgear fan. And a Nikon user too. Hmm, so let me see – if you use Nikon and I use Canon, then I better steer clear of the Netgear. Ha ha, only joking  I’ll have a look into the DG834G too.

I have a wireless router working hard, a D-Link DI-524. There was no thinking involved when I bought it, only the price, speed and features were taken into consideration. I am not sure, if there is any difference between routers at all, on the other hand, I am not an IT professional.

    :D Thorsten.

Can’t recall why I went with Netgear after. I think it was probably cost and the fact that the general ratings were good.
Oh and I got the USB device for very little/free with it as part of the deal.

I actually wanted Linksys though lol. Of course once I got one Netgear device I figured that it was easier to stay with the
one brand. Less problems with incompatibilites between brands etc….

Gotta say I dislike Netgear. Anytime a new OS come around, they stick their heads in the ground and refuse to update existing drivers. I’ve a bunch of Netgear devices I can’t use because there’s no suitable drivers for Vista. I experienced the same with their 10/100 NIC’s when XP came out.

I had a Netgear router and it was no better than the previous Belkin that I had. Both lasted only a few months. I’ve been usng a Linksys for 18 months with no problems. I’m told that there’s also an update available for Linksys for IPv6 support as well.

Did a little more research and in the end I settled on a Linksys WRT54GL. Should be here during the week. Thanks for all the feedback.
