Petrol prices

I received an e-mail today which I think is worth passing on…….it goes
    something like this.

With the price of petrol increasing almost daily it has been suggested that we stop
buying it to force the price down……impractical and laughable, but what is to stop
us exculding one petrol company…….for example dont buy from say ESSO until they are
forced to reduce the prices of their petrol to regain cusotmers thus instigating a price
war with all the other petrol suppliers forced to compete? Simple but effective. Pass
it on to just 10 people and before you know it by the time the sixth generation of people
have been contacted 3,000,000 people would have been contacted in 8 DAYS. Id say
it could work………….what say you? It is time the consumers stood up for themselves.

i dont know about a boycott like that but i was thinking of a silly really sort of protest [not sure of the legality though] but anyway i was thinking if people that were low on fuel and looking for a competitively priced station gave two toots of the horn passing by to say “i’m running on empty but you’re too pricey and i’m going to the next station”

obviously in daylight hours as you’ve be driving neighbours nuts with the noise

    silly or what?

Dunno Fintan I think you would get arrested for disturbing the peace :)
You would have to go into the garage and say you were going somewhere
else because they were too expensive…….I would say most people (unless
they are on empty or have travel expenses) already are “boycotting” the more expensive outlets
and shop around for cheaper petrol.

Maybe we should all be lobbying the government that take 55% of the price of a litre in taxes!!

To be honest not to sound rude but it is a load of b**ls
I have worked for a petrol company since 1999
and have just been made redundant kicked out on my ass with a thanks very much
the only thing action like this will do is get more people on the dole
the oil companys make billions a day and do you really think a few motorists in a small filling station not comming in will change anything
There is a bad enough turndown in the building trade without sending more people to the dole to join them

Sorry to hear of your bad luck Cathal, but oil companies are making
billions by ripping off the customers and if we dont make a stand nobody
else is going to do it for us. A “few” motorists wont make a difference you
are right, but if we all make an effort and lets be honest using a different
petrol station is not much of an effort, it could make a difference. I have
not seen many petrol stations close down over the past ten years they spend
thousands refitting all of the time when there is nothing wrong with the existing
    building/shop/forecourt etc.

The solution is, get a smaller car. Petrol prices will only go up.

Alot of these petrol stations are oil company owned and can run a good profit on tight margins if they want to
In my years working for my last employer who is just on the border all the local stations phoned around eachother and set the prices
The other problem is the goverment they dont care how high it goes because they make a fortune on the taxes
Its a vicious circle unfortunatly which has a serious knockon effect to everything
I think i will blow up the tyres on my bike and get some way of strapping a tripod to it
    I ned the exercise anyhow

    It’s more than just Oil companies… it’s a combination of factors…

A crazy stock market where an Arab sheik farting in the wrong direction causes oil prices to soar.

Greedy economies… like the US and China who can’t get enough of the stuff.

Lazy governments who are prepared to sit around and do nothing about it.

    Protests are starting

    http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20080530/tts-uk-fuel-protests-ca02f96.html

Private Bus Companies doing school runs are kicking up here too.

Only problem is… I can’t for the love of me ever remember where any protest ever had a postive effect on fuel prices. Feel free to correct me.

Sorry to hear that Cathal. Personally I dont like singling out any particular company for a boycott.

It’s unlikely the government will act on the duty/vat because of the budget defecit we’re looking at. Only international pressure on production would be appropriate I think.

Basically its down to the consumer to shop around and find the most competitive price. The difference in price between the highest and the lowest is shocking at times, some stations are just unreal.
