Beginner in need of advice

    Hi all!!!

I’m a complete beginner to photography! I’ve travelled the world with a 9 mega pixel camera (which is about as much as I know about cameras) and I have taken some pretty cool pics. But I’ve decided I want to step up a few levels and start getting into more detail than just ordinary pics. is there any advise anyone can give me please? i.e. best camera type/cost/functions etc. best magazines/websites etc?

I’m also hoping to do a photography course in Dublin/Waterford so if anyone knows any good courses??

    Thanks a lot.

    Kind Regards

    Hi Gio, and welcome!

I’m assuming the camera you currently have is a compact, and you’re interested in getting an SLR (where you can change lenses). The good news is that these are all very competitively priced at the moment, so you’ll get an entry level Canon, Nikon, or Pentax for around €600 with a basic lens. If you do buy an SLR, I’d advise you not to go mad buying other gear until you get a firm idea of what you want to take photos of (eg. landscapes, street photography, portraits, nature etc). Get to know how the camera works first, and you can proceed from there.

As regards magazines, Practical Photography, Digital Camera, and Photography monthly are all good bets for anybody starting out. There’s also an excellent book called “Understanding Exposure” by Bryan Peterson. I really couldn’t recommend this enough to anybody starting out who wants to learn about getting exposure right.

As for websites, PI is a good start!

In Waterford, I know WIT do have a beginners photography course. Dunhill Education Centre also run courses fairly regularly. I know a few people that did them, and they said they were grand. You could also come along to the Waterford camera club if you like. We’ve reasonably regular outings, which are good for getting advise as to how to get to grips with your camera. Let me know if you’re interested in that, and I can forward you the details.

Digital Beginners is a great source for courses and you get to meet others of like mind.
Dave is now expanding his courses in other parts of the country as well – that may be more convenient for you.
