is this Sigma DC 3,5-6,3/18-200 OS HSM, the equivalent of Nikon 18-200MM F3.5-5.6G IF-ED AF-S VR DX?

there is a huge price difference and i just want to make sure. any thoughts on third party lenses? i can’t afford the nikon just now, so should i wait or take the plunge?

also, i have a nikon 18-135 and 50mm 1.8, would i be better saving for a 70-300? i know it depends on what i;m going to use it for.

i take the occasional landscape but i mostly take portraits.

    little help?

An observation, if I may. I think a maximum aperture of f/6.3 at the 200mm end is going to cause you some headaches. Just when you need a higher shutter speed to allow for the fact that you’re shooting at 200mm, you end up having no choice but to select a much slower shutter speed because of the slow maximum aperture. Even the f/5.6 on the Nikon is quite slow. Ask yourself, do you really need such a wide zoom range? Invariably, the longer the zoom range, the more compromises in the lens design affecting image quality will have been made.

Why not treat yourself to a nice 70-200mm f/2.8 lens? Not cheap, but it needn’t cost the earth either if you go for something like the Sigma one.

Thorsten is absolutely right. You will only see the same image quality as your 18-135 if you choose either 18-200 lenses, which is average. The Sigma 70-200/2.8 is optically very good, and you would be very surprised about the difference compared to those slow zooms. I would suggest you to try those lenses before buying, ask someone to lend you a 70-200 or go into a shop and try them. I saw a Nikon 80-200/2.8 Af-D on the adverts.ie… http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?product=39482&cat=51 . If you can afford one, that would be the best option.

70-300’s are very slow, too with not really nice bokeh and they are only useful when you have enough light, I wouldn’t suggest anyone to buy one of them. But it’s just my opinion, people buy them all the time nonetheless. Pick a used one of these slow zooms instead of new, there are always a few in the classified sections.

I’ve just seen Sigma 70-300 for €50… if you are quick, you can def. grab a bargain there. Good luck then!
