Great detail and he certainly had his eye on you, it looks at a funny angle though
I have twisted and turned (both myself and the screen) and think it looks more
natural up the other way……..just my humble opinion :)
Smashing shot Rob. One for the book – shows the pink legs nicely.
For a man who professes to have no knowledge of birds you have
a fairly good collection of bird photos.
i like this shot, well done (its actually a herring gull larus argentatus)
I wondered about this too, I’d be interested to know how you’re so sure.
I do believe Epix is correct in the identification here. Further reading tells me the larus argentatus can be identified by the pale yellow ring around the eye and
the white spot, known as a mirror, at the wingtips. Thanks for the correction there.
I’ll move it in the virtual bird book too.
You’ve better eyes than I have, Rob – or maybe the full size shot allows you to see the
ring around its orbital. I suspected the bill looked a bit light for a GBBG, but you were
there and I thought maybe you’d seen his great black back. I’m too tactful to get in an
argument with anyone.
Yes Pete, full size shows it clearly enough.
There were hundreds of gulls, great and lesser black backed as well as
herring, common and black headed, and trying to follow them wasn’t
too easy. I’d just assumed from the underside and the pink legs that
this was a GBBG…
