Any PI members had Laser Eye Surgery done?
-
Vanessa kennedyMember
I’ve an appointment this Tuesday in the Galway Clinic to see am I suitable for Laser Eye surgery…. Just wondering have any of ye folks had it done or knows someone who’s had it done? Really hope I will be deemed suitable for it. Been wearing glasses for the last twenty years or so and contacts on & off for the last 6 or 7 yrs
Would love to be able to just see the clock in the mornings, be able to walk inside on a cold night & not have the specs fogging up, or know whether I’m picking up shampoo or conditioner in the shower (or Immac – now that would be bad!  )
Would love to hear any feedback lads :? :?Cheers! :)
steelydanParticipantFrom what I have heard Vanessa its a little pain for about 30 mins and then it eases. Like a burning sensation but you see the results immediately. I friend of mine had it done and she swears its the best decision she has ever made. Not an eyeglass wearer myself but my wife wears them and to be honest I cant imagine what its like to have glasses, but to be selfish I prefer her with them, if you know what i mean.
Vanessa kennedyMemberThanks for the reply John… IF they say I’m suitable, I’m still a bit nervous of getting it done. Not of the procedure, but the outcome… :?
AND – it’s alot of dough to fork out too! Could get myself an amazing camera & acces for the price!
Am I mad?!!?!
Time will tell!
:lol:lousyParticipantI’ve read some stuff about this Vanessa cos I was thinking of having it done myself, and let’s face it , it costs a lot of money. Anyway one may be deemed suitable for the surgery but the small print states that this does not guarantee that you will not suffer from ‘dry eye’ afterwards. This apparently is a terrible thing to put up with and there is NO cure and if affected you would have to use drops for the rest of your life.
I have to say that put me off a bit, that and the cost.
Hope this is of some help Vanessa and sorry if I’ve scared you, but that’s what I got when I googled it.Pat
DeeboParticipantI personally know 5 people that has had it done.,They all say its the best thing ever. Go for it
Vanessa kennedyMemberPat, excuse the pun but I’m nearly gone ‘blind’ from googling this!
Yeah, I’ve read lots about this dry eye thing, seems some people never recover fully with it. how bad is your prescription Pat? I’m -4.25 in both eyes…
And yes, it does cost a small fortune…. Between the assessment and the procedure, (IF I’m suitable, it’ll be 4620 EURO!Going with the Galway Clinic because of #1, reputation, and , #2, a few friends have had it done there…
Anyway, I am only having the assessment on Tuesday, If I’m considered suitable, it’s then that I’ll have to make up my mind….
Keep the aul fingers crossed! :wink:Vanessa kennedyMemberlousyParticipantBest of luck Vanessa and again I’m sorry if my post seemed ‘alarming’ but I’m sure the percentage is very low for the dry eye and I hope you are a suitable candidate, and I’m sure you’ll be fine.
I only started wearing glasses full time about five years ago as the work I do consists me reading hand held computer and I couldn’t do the job without them.Pat
Vanessa kennedyMemberNot a bother Pat, you didn’t alarm me….. I wouldn’t expect that from PI folk!
Another ‘friend’ sent me a link of a video of the procedure gone wrong! Nuff said, eh?! :lol:BrickeeParticipantYou coulf probably fly to the states ,get your surgery, buy a camera and still save money.
I have heard a few people here saying they have had it done for under $1000.00 dallors.Jim
sm323fMemberHey Vanessa,
I just got mine done 2 weeks ago. I got Lasik done, in Dubai in the Gulf Eye Centre (look them up) by a surgeon called Dr Millicent Grim. Despite her name she is a good humoured person!!! Here is my story.Like you I looked on the net for the past few years about the surgery, have seen all the videos good and bad and knew what i let myself in for. The reason why I went to the Gulf Eye Centre is because the Dr isnt afraid to say no if you are not suitable, two of my friends here got it done with her and one lad was told that he couldnt get it done as his eyes were too thin. She is honest and not just in it for the money. Excellent service too.
With regard to my eyes, i was nearly -6 (which is pretty bad) and have been wearing glasses/contacts for the past 15 years or so. Went for the consultation a month ago, was told I was suitable after 2 hours of tests, asked all the questions I wanted and was booked in to do it 2 weeks ago.
The surgery itself is a doddle, the hardest thing is to try not to think of the if and’s and buts on what ‘could’ happen! The surgery was done in about 20 mins for both eyes and could see nearly perfectly straight afterwards. You cannot feel anything so dont be afraid of that, the only horrible thing is the smell you get when the laser is working-lasts for about 10 seconds but is vial! Went home to bed afterwards and slept for a few hours. They give you 3 sets of drops, one for inflamation, one to prevent glucoma (spelling?) and one lubricant. Use 3 times a day and thats it! Went to work the following day with no problems at all. My eyes were still a bit blurry (only slightly) but could see everything fine just not sharply. Went in for the check up the day after, everything was good, thank god, but my eyes were still a bit blurry. I was told that they may get better with the first week until they settle. To me they felt like a -1 or -2 but obviously that was an overstatement.
Last week i went for the 1 week check up, everything went good. My eyes were down to -0.75 which was some change from -6! The Dr and myself werent too happy that they werent corrected better, but everybody heals differently. She said that if my eyes need to be corrected again that it would be done in 2 months (no extra charge either), you have to give your eyes time to heal properly first, but that it is a common procedure and since the most difficult/risky part is done (making the flap) it is straight forward enough(I hope!). With high perscriptions like mine, and possibly yours, there is a greater risk they will need to be done again, topped up. Just be aware of that. It doesnt mean the operation was a failure, just that everyone heals differently and to be honest its better to be undercorrected than over corrected!
I have another check up in 2 weeks, 1 month after the surgery, to see how they are then. I feel they are still the same now, only a slight bit blurry. I can do everything with no glasses or contacts, its great! I would definatlely recommend at least getting the consultation, you wont know until you get that anyway. Just for your info the surgery cost 10,000 Dirhams which is about 1800 euro for both eyes. Ya cant beat tax free Dubai!!!So thats my story so far, I will update after my next check up. Feel free to PM me if you want to know more or have any questions at all about it. I found it great to talk to my friend who got it done a month before I did, asked him so many questions but it was such a relief to be able to get answers from someone who just got it done. The thought of the surgery was the scary bit…the surgery itself was a doddle. Just do your research on the net about the whole thing, but also very importantly your surgeon, your eyes are in his/her hands! They make the difference.
Sorry if the story is long winded but I wanted to share my experience to a fellow PI member who is contemplating getting it done. The more you know the more of an informed decision you make!

ExpresbroParticipantMy brother in law got this done a couple of years ago. Before the op he wore what I would affectionately call beer bottle glasses and was practically blind. To read a newspaper he would have to hold it within a few inches of his face.
He got the operation and now wears regular glasses…his vision is not perfect..but so much improved that he passed his driving test and now drives quite happily. This was totally inconceivable before the operation.
The whole thing was life changing for him.
Just my little addition to the story :D

8)GCPParticipantMy friend had it done in the Galway Clinic about 3 weeks ago, had a bit of trouble afterwards and had to get more work done on one eye but now its fine and last time I talked to him he was well pleased. I would get it done myself but I’m not at all suitable …. (would still need to wear glasses with prisms afterwards) so I might as well just stay as I am. Then I am wearing them since I was 7 so I know no better !
I do remember a bride booking me back in 1994 and you could not see her wyws through the glasses she was wearing, they were like the bottomes of bottles. She had her laser done for the wedding and has never had a problem since. That was the first time I ever came across it but it was worth it in her case. veronica, best of luck with it and hope it all goes well and that you achieve better than 20/20 afterwards.
FrankCParticipantJust my opinions here (as a photographer and life-long glasses wearer). I’ve also considered it, and read many articles on the internet and other places on the subject.
For the people where it works, it’s great. I know a few people where it’s been very successful (and 1 where it hasn’t).
However, there is a risk of problems. In almost all cases where there are problems, they are non-reversible.
I have also seen quoted a few times, though can’t confirm, that most if not all eye surgeons would not consider the operation for themselves.Although it’s an inconvenience, I can have perfect vision, without any surgery, by wearing glasses.
This option is risk-free. I’m not prepared to take the risk when I have an acceptable alternative (i.e. glasses) available.joe_elwayParticipantIf I had cash in the bank, I’d deffo do it. I hate wearing my glasses and prefer contacts when I can but they come with their own problems too. I know two people whove had it done and they highly recommend it.
