D3 problem..

Hey Guys,
I didnt see a proper place to post this, hope here is okay. I have 2 problems with it at the moment,
I have a Nikon D3 and use 8gb Sandisk Extreme3 cards in it, 1st problem I have is that it reports the wrong no. of images left that can be taken. When the cards are empty it reports 402 images can be taken, but as I found out today I can take over 650+ images.
2nd problem is this, I bought a 28-70 f2.8 lens 2nd hand recently, when I take a shot on the D3 with it, it tales the image properly but reports ERROR on the lcd when the shot has been taken. Now I can still go ahead and take another shot and it will meter and expose it properly but because it has an error on the lcd it slows down the frame rate which is quite annoying.
This goes away if I switch it on and off and doesnt occur with any other lenses.
Anyone got any ideas what it could be?
Thanks in advance,
Alan
Edited: to add the following updates..
Just got a solution to problem 1, apparently remaining pictures is a guestimate, D3 changes file size dynamically.
Second one is getting even more interesting & frustrating, Ive tried a few things this morning based on what people have been telling me to do, lens works fine on other bodies, D80 & D300, lens works fine on D3 at 28mm, but as soon as I zoom to anything beyond this it gives the error signal.randomwayMemberI have read a similar thread on dpreview about the number of photos the camera displays… I think the guy found out in the end that it wasn’t doing it with other cards… did you try Extreme IV’s or Ultra II’s? Are you formatting the cards in-camera? The second problem would seem to be in connection with the mem card, too… worth trying if you still have the problems when using different cards.
AMPParticipantThanks random, I have tried a new extreme 4 and an old cheaper unbranded cf card but the problem still occurs. it writes the images just fine either way, had thought it could be a contacts problem between the lens and camera, not sure tho.
randomwayMemberAMPParticipantYeah, just updated it last week, got the lens around the same time, hoped it was the firmware thats at fault.
i hear there is a new firmware coming out v.soon, will update to that then and hope for the best.
you know anything thats good for cleaning lens contacts?GCPParticipantAMP wrote:

Back in the 70’s in my Computer manufacturing days when we used gold finger contact computer modules we used rubber erasers (used by child to “rub out” pencil writing) to clean the contacts. Do it easily and not often as it will wear the gold from the contact. Its not the best solution but it works.
AMPParticipantThanks Gerry, appreciate all the help.
I’ll probably have to wait til Monday morning and rob some kids pencil case, altho knowing me I probably still have my old school one, being a hoarder and all.
Thanks againAMPParticipantOkay, both problems solved, cleaned the contacts on the camera and problem solved.
Thanks allAndyLParticipantMy D300 does the wrong remaining file size thing too, but you alwats get more than it says so I dont worry too much!
AMPParticipantFrustratingly, the problem with the lens is back again, turns out its not the contacts problem like I thought.
Fiddled with it frustratedly and have found that the lens is a slightly loose mount so if you twist it clockwise(looking at lens) it will work fine, but as soon as it slips back, even as slightly as it does, the lens reports an error, although it still meters and works fine.
Anyone ever have this problem? And is it fixable?AllinthemindParticipantAs you say. The shots remaining is a guesstimate; with lossless compression turned on, the number will vary (always more than it says and it adapts as you keep shooting).
re. the lens. Are all the screws tight? Twist the aperture ring a few times then lock it at the smallest aperture. Clean the contacts.
If all else fails, send it back :)
Si
AMPParticipantThanks Si,
Appreciate the help, I tried that with the aperture ring, problem persists unfortunately, and I bought it 2nd hand so no returns policy.
AlangregorParticipantHey Guys,
Just came across that post so sorry for being late but some of you may find this info handy, if you can take more photos than the counter indicates, check if you have switched on function (compressed NEFs), I know that in D200 if that’s on the file size is smaller by about 50% however the counter remains the same as the function was turned off so you have to estimate how many shots you have left. Probably something similar apply to your cameras assuming you have this function in your menu!
