Critique and suggestions for improvement are very welcome on these. All taken on Wednesday night last under tricky lighting! :)

#1 not sharp enough and wrong shutter speed, nice composition though.

#2 Look’s like she is a waxwork, her face seems to be melting, too much PP?
Is that an Orange in the front too, distracting.

#3 Nice, would like it sharper though.

    #4 Same as #3

    #5 Best of the lot.

Overall I do like what you’re trying to do though, what distance where you away from her and what lens were you using?

Thanks for the feedback. These were all taken using a 50mm lens on a 400D. In terms of distance, I was lucky enough to be able to move around a bit during the gig so at least I was able to get a little variance. (The 85mm f1.8 is top of my wishlist at the moment!)
With the first, I was trying to capture some movement as she was quite energetic, so I did lose some sharpness.
I’m not sure what the correct musical term for the orange is but it’s one of those rattles in the shape of an orange.. I composed the shot to include this detail but I can see why it is distracting.
    I appreciate the comments. :)

Wow not a bad effort with such a short fixed focal length, you say #1 you tried to capture some movement, have you the camera set to al-servo?

I suspect that the noise reduction took away from the sharpness, it doesn’t look like camera shake or wrong focus to me.

    The last picture is fantastic!

I didn’t try that actually. I wonder how well it would perform in such low light? I must give it a go next time out!

Good point. I’m glad you like the last one, that’s my pick of the bunch too. It’s cropped heavier than I would like, hence the promotion of a longer fast lens to the top of my wishlist!

    85 1.8 is my main gig lens, even though I’ve a 24-70 2.8, and 70-200 2.8.

Last one is easily the best.
Still. NME’s old list of don’ts includes no mics covering any of the face… tough enough to do on any gig.

Noise reduction is fine, if you remember to sharpen edges afterwards.

Hi Sean, the gigs I go to are pub gigs so I used to use the 50 f1.4 but found I couldn’t get a wider shot of the band as I was too close, bought the 24-105L f/4 and was worried in case it wouldn’t be fast enough, I need not have worried, tis fantastic. Suppose at bigger gigs the 85 1.8 is quite good.

Don’t bother coming to the Roisin Dubh to shoot, you’ll get nothing with an f/4… unless they are absolutely still and you don’t mind 1/15-1/30 sec 1600!

Cheers Sean. Definitely gonna get me one of those 85mm f1.8’s. Out of curiosity, are there many other guidelines from the NME?

As for using an f4 lens, my norm for gig shots is usually shooting at f1.8 at ISO1600. Occasionally, I will try a few at ISO800 when there is some good light. You must be lucky enough to have a very well lit pub!

The whole band, as well as shots of the singer

A mixture of shots with various close ups (ie not only tight shots of people singing)

The crowd/crowd in shot with band where possible

A long shot of the venue stage from the back of the room/in the crowd

There’s one or two comments on shootings fans, but that’s for the mag specifically (the ‘how did you like the gig?’ bit)

*most importantly please shoot in colour and without long shutter speeds that create motion blurs.

When I shot Ryan Adams, they were specific about the mic:
Most importantly can you make sure that when you shoot Ryan, that the mic doesnt obstruct his face as we need clear shots of him singing etc.

Thanks Sean, that’s an interesting list.

I googled Roisin Dubh and came up with this map, I live in Dominick street, although mine is in Dublin.

Unless there was a Punk band and when I say Punk band I mean proper Punk band I doubt I’d go to a fair few venues…going to a fest up in Donegal this weekend, guess I’ll bring the 50mm 1.4 along just in case them…
the 24-105L I got to use was in Eamon Dorans and Dalymount bar in Phibsbro’.

    Dorans

Guitarist is brighter because of lighting effect from stage etc

    Both from Boh’s Dalymount.

With flash, by the looks of it!

Unless the band are local, the tours managers have a strict first 3 songs, no flash rule. You can get away with more, but if you put a flash on.. it’s out the door… Yep loads of compacts bang away, but I’ve seen bands with security preventing them in the past..

Maybe I need to sneak a flash into the ceiling on a remote and use my little G9 ;)

Nah…. I do sound there, so it does give me a little more leeway..
