What are the benefits of both approaches?
    Are they similar techniques?

Taking multiple exposures is part of creating a HDR image as far as I know. The multiple exposures gives you greater tonal range than a single shot and so you can blend each exposure together in Photoshop or Photomatix (or something else) giving you the HDR. The result is a 32bit image which can be tone mapped to allow for better viewing on your monitor. Don’t quote me on that last part though!

I believe you can create a HDR from one raw image also.
