Hi i recently bought the new sony alpha a200 which is sny entry level dslr and i am quite happy with it , it takes some extreemly clear images and it has a lovely black and white setting and a vivid setting,

Im just wondering are there any other alpha owners or if you have any opinons on it and where i might get some cheap lenses with it.

The lens i got with it is a 3.5-5.6/18-70 sony lens but i heard the mount can also take minolta lenses but i dont have a big budget but would like a lens that will have a better zoom, thanks guys

Sigma and Tokina make Sony compatible lenses.

Lot of Sigma lens owners around here and a few Tokina owners too.

Sigma 70-300 APO is supposed to be a decent zoom lens and can be got cheap enough from eBay

If you are interested I have a Minolta AF 75mm-300mm f4.5-5.6 here that I’m about to put on Ebay. Its been very little used and I just dont have a use for it. A reasonable off er would not be turned down ! I do believe it fits the camera you have.

ok and sorry im only a begginner im just wondering is the zoom a lot better than a 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 lens which i got with my camera?
and would your one be better say for shooting birds in flight?

sorry for the q’s i am only new to all this stuff

The kit lens works well as a lens…but it’s not the best of them. Have a look on Ebay for a second hand one and you’ll find the postage costs more but DON’T GET ME WRONG – it works and works well but a few quid extra and you get better quality.
I have an A100 & an A700 and they take Monolta (don’t go near the MC or MD fitting) and Siigma as well as Tamron. Tokina only do the 80-200mm f2.8 as far as I’ve ever been able to ascertain. If I was looking for a cheaper, compatible version of a lens look at the second hand Minolta range and also the Sigma. I haven’t heard of a Tamron being up there with the rest of them.
One final note – you get what you pay for with one exception – Sony lenses are excessively priced but it does apply with everything else.

75-300 would take everything closer to you (the longer the lens the closer everything is). It really comes down to what you want to shoot. i do some work for insurance companies and use an 800mm lens sometimes. Give me a PM if I can help further. I see you are in Galway also so we could meet up if you wish to try it out.

as sony have it on the alpha range their is set of alpha lenses made for it, specifically, sure they fit elsewer but alpha lenses, i got the 18-50mm and the 55-200mm with it but looking to go abit furthur up, looking at a 75-200 and the f1.4

as the camera goes i like it, quick shooting, its auto focus is a bit long winded so i switched it to manual n jus worked through it, gives nicer shots if demanding lighting needed quickly

Another Alpha punter here. I don’t know if you’ve got a lens yet or not, but have a serious look at the Minolta 70-210 f4, known as the “Beercan”. Should get one on eBay for about £100Stg, it’s 20years old, but it’s stunning quality and beats some of the current offerings priced at 4-5 times more (and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise) and it’s fast too.

BTW: I’ve got two of them, they’re fantastic!!

    There’s some good Minolta/Sony reviews at http://www.dyxum.com

so its a 20 year old lens?but is it to do with the way things were made back then or is it that its no longer in production? i take it its manual focus?im a strong believer the older the better built because new stuff is made with cheaper materials like cars, everything is gone carbon fibre if you get me lol.

Hiya scotty, althou it’s 20years old it’s still Auto-Focus and fully compatable with the Sony Alpha mount. Works perfectly with my A100, I use it mostly for motorbike racing. The first ever Auto Focus SLR was the Minolta 7000, which I still have, the “Beercan” came out shortly after the 7000.
It’s built like a tank, it really is, as the tube section is made from metal not plastic like today’s lenses. Bear in mind as it’s a reasonably fast lens at f4, you still have the in-camera Super Steady Shot, f4 Canon and Nikon lenses with shake reduction will be cost about 5 times as much as the “Beercan”.

    Go for it man.
