2 toned apple

VidcoMember
I took this today for a competition in work.
As always any C&C or advice on to improve would be greatly appreciated.
Exposure: 0.077 sec (1/13)
Aperture: f/18
Focal Length: 159 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV
Flash: Flash firednfl-fanParticipantI think it’s a great idea Dave… and a pretty well executed photo.
I can’t really suggest and suggestions for improvement… maybe a square crop… just a little more breathing space? I like square… I think it has a cuteness where simple images are concerned.

randomwayMemberI think it could take some brightening on the left side, and the background would look a bit better if it was white. Also, there is a wet patch or shadow in the foreground that makes the image less tidy.
The shadow on the left is more interesting than the big empty space on the top, so I would consider horizontal framing.
I wouldn’t use an aperture of f/18 if possible. I would start around f/11, 1/200, set the flash power and distance until I got a correct exposure on the apple, then I could play with the shutter speed to blow out the background and get the balance I need. I would also use a white foam board on the left side to bring up the shadows, and maybe play around with a second flash to get some highlights on the droplets.
It’s a good start though.
VidcoMemberThanks John, square crop looks a lot better.
Randomway, really helpful advice there. Thanks for that.
Are you saying take one shot for the apple and another for the background for the blown out effect or is it all in one shot?
I think it’s a wet patch from spraying the apple in a rush.randomwayMemberI was talking about an option when the scene is lit by a flash. Were you using natural light or something else?
VidcoMemberOh ok.
I was using natural light from a window on the right of the apple and I had a flash on camera.
With the camera in portrait aspect the flash was then on the left of the apple. I also had a diffuser on the flash.
