What am I doing wrong?
-
GenieParticipant
I am soooooo frustrated. Trying to take pictures with a macro dipoter but my pictures are coming out c%#p! They are no were near sharp enough and I am getting so frustrated. I am shooting with an 28-105mm lense and the dipoeter but I am really unhappy with the snaps. I am just posting a few of the “better” ones, so if anyone can throw any light on what I am doing wrong I would be grateful.
Sorry for the long post.

nfl-fanParticipantCan’t see too much wrong with these Janine.. bar the last one.. where usually you’d want the stamen(s) in focus and the petals blurred… but that’s just a matter of getting your focus point right. Still an interesting shot though.. one that breaks the “rules”.
In relation to the sharpness… did you add any during post processing? I always sharpen images… I’ve seen mention of pros who always sharpen their images. I don’t see any huge issues in terms of sharpness.
The second shot you seem to have a very small depth of field… which means that only one stamen is in focus… this isn’t an issue… assuming it was the desired effect?
Did you use a tripod when taking these shots?
jb7ParticipantYou might be asking too much of your depth of field-
at high magnification, dof is extremely limited-I can’t access your exif, so I don’t know the settings-
but it might help to figure out what part of the objects you’re photographing are actually your subject-
in the case of your last picture,
it’s unusual to have an out of focus element (the stamen) in front of the subject (the petals)-perhaps embracing the bokeh might be a strategy…

nfl-fanParticipantGenieParticipantThanks for replying guys. John I did use a tripod, thought I was going to strangle it. :D Also I dont have PS, I am using Picasa at the moment and sharpen the pictures using this. It wasn’t actually the desired effect to only have one stamen in focus, its all I could manage. Maybe as J said I am expecting to much, but when I look at the other pictures in the macro section I just think mine are awful. I will just have to keep practising and posting.
Thanks for replying, I appreciate it.Janine
osheadParticipantThese images are very nice Janine.
You could try opening and closing the aperture on different shots to see what setting produces the ‘sweet spot’ with that particular lense + diopter combo. I always sharpen the images. At the moment I use focus magic plugin with PS.

nfl-fanParticipantJanine… bar #4 (which is a bit quirky)… the shots aren’t that bad at all… in fact the Yellow Rose is quite pleasant. (I’m assuming it’s a rose.. I’m no flower expert).
More often than not you won’t get perfectly sharp images off the camera and some post processing usually take them to the places they need to go.
I’ve often shot flowers in the house… and from 100 shots you might get 2 or 3 you’re truly happy with… so don’t worry too much. Just keep trying.

GenieParticipantThanks John and Dave, feel a bit better now. John its actually a begonia. Yeah I will just have to keep practising, I shot them all in f4 or f5.6 so thanks for that tip Dave I will try different apertures.

nfl-fanParticipantDave: Focus Magic… I just had a look at that Dave… but from what I can see it only wants to fix blurred images. Do you use it for standard sharpening?

Yeah. It works well for v.high magnification macro. Ie… Lifesize and more. I tend to over do Unsharp mask. The effect sometimes looks un-natural.

PS.
Though I should say. I’ve never used it to fix blurred, out of focus images. :)
