Another Causeway adventure – Port na Tober

Here’s another rarely seen view of the Causeway.

mcmartin joined me for another daring descent of the Pleaskin cliff followed by a sea level scramble round the head itself to reach Port na Tober, rarely visited and no photographs to be found anywhere online.

The collapsed sea arch on the left used to be known as the “Giant’s Eyeglass” and I have an old photo which I will post shortly showing it fully intact. The stack on the right is known in the old books as “The King and His Nobles”. An amazing place.

Two nice shots Andy, the colours of the sky in number 1 really make it a super shot. I would be interseted to see the old photograph of the ” Giants Eyeglass”, just to see the difference.

    Cheers Dave,

Right now, all I can find is this old etching.

I knew it… I knew that Andy would bring the “big guns” right away… nice shots, beautiful place… believe me guys… I think I couldn’t have wished for better first evening out with someone from PI… and Andy definitely made this evening very interesting… bit longish walk to stretch legs for the start, CRAZZZZY climbing down to the old path, than walking very narrow path above really high cliffs, and totally unpredictable way down to sea level…. but that wasn’t over…
the most interesting part was in front of us, or rather below… swell getting stronger and stronger, and waves hitting exactly our way back… fighting with time, we managed to get few good shots, well Andy did… I don’t really know yet…
I’m about to start working on my shots… we’ll see what comes of that…
well, this way or another, THANKS Andy for very interesting adventure, I’m sure not the last one…

I’m glad you enjoyed it Martin.

It was quite an adventure and with that tricky tidal corner recced we’ve opened up a feasible route all the way to famous Lacada point where 1400 men of the Girona lost their lives. We’ll get there before the year is out, that’s if the national trust warden doesn’t get us with his blunderbuss.

If anyone else would like to come along next Thursday, I have yet more adventures planned on the Causeway headlands. Just bring a torch and a fit pair of legs.

In the meantime, here one final image of the Giant’s eyeglass from the other side.

Lovely shot Andy, Would love to meet up for another shoot and catch up. but as you know Im not fit for that kind of adventure. But will catch up for a beach shoot soon.

    Sean.

Dunno about this Andy i have seen a lot better from you, the sky in the first one looks strange maybe a bit un-natural and there are to many black shilottes for my liking !
Also the angle you took it from is to low to relate to the older version, unless you told me i wouldnt of knowen it was the causeway.

    Cheers Ricky, Sean

Sorry Ricky, I don’t think my post made it clear. This is quite a walk away from the causeway itself, it is actually near the northernmost point of the causeway headlands near benbane head.

The old etchings and photos are just really to show you how the eyeglass has changed. Now it’s just a stack, not many people know the story behind it.

As far as the silhouettes are concerned, I could have HDRd it of course, but I prefered a more natural darkness. Now we’ve made this first visit we have several ideas how to photograph these stacks to bring out some more detail. I’ll keep you posted.

    Cheers

yeah quite a walk from causeway horizontally and believe me quite a walk-o-slide vertically… the photos, and sketches show the place from above… we were at see level… so definitely different views…
