Manfrotto Tripod Combi

    Anyone have this combination ?

Manfrotto 190XPROB with the 322RC2 Ball Head.

I’ve more or less decided on the legs (right balance of weight to cost for me) but I’m unsure about the head. I like the convenience of a ball head but it did seem a little awkward to use. €300 in Conns for the two.

    Any advice ?

I think several members have this combo.

It’s fine if a bit heavy if there’s much distance involved.

I’m bringing mine to the Saltees so you can have a go yourself. :0)

I have the older 190ProB legs and I had the 322RC2 head which I bought them from Gunns for about €250.
I recently sold the 322RC2 head because I found it was too easy to move, so it is useless for macros and requires a lot of fiddling to get it working for doing landscape shots. The head lacks “precision” for doing a landscape or macro.
I have since bought a 460MG pan and tilt head for my tripod and a 484RC2 ball head for my monopod which has suited me a lot better has I mainly use the ball head and monopod for wildlife and then the other combination for landscape, macros, etc.

    Hope that helps

Podge I have the 055XPROB with the 322RC2 head and have found it a great combination, I’ve had no problems with the head as it has a friction adjustment which you can move to suit yourself. Having said that I don’t do macro………..but no problems with landscape shots!!

Thanks for your comments guys. Sorry Pixelle (Stephanie right ?) I totally forgot to ask you about your tripod on the Saltees.

Anyway, I went into to Conns and tried out the head. I have to say that I’m not that impressed with it. The sales guy set it up for me and showed me all the cool things you can do with Manfrotto tripods but when I asked him how to tilt the camera back (i.e. towards the sky) he couldn’t figure it out. I reckon that you have to put the camera in at 180 degrees to normal and pan the head around or is there another way ?

Also, I’ve seen people complain about the length of the central column. I think CathalD even took a hacksaw to his so I’m looking at the 055 instead.

I mainly want it for a trip to the the US next month so I’ve decided to buy on arrival there as they are considerable cheaper (25-30%).

The central column is long no matter which model you choose.. 190 or 055.

I got a short column for my 055 which is a foot shorter than the standard column and you can get the tripod down to about 8 inches which is brill.

    totally forgot

    So did I!
Yes there are certain angles I can’t get, so just have to take the gear off and reposition it as you said.
