so, i have a friend who is very competitive, she’s fairly impressed with my “tinkering” with my camera (the humble nikon d80) and she’s decided that she wants to give this photography lark a go. now, her official occupation is “heiress” and she’s going full whack with a D3, fast lenses, sb800s, diamond encrusted friggin tripods ;) the lot, if you get my drift. the last time she picked up a camera was in 1999. and i’m, well… jealous. there. i said it. i wish her all the best, really i do. but i just had to get this off my chest.

    it’s not the camera, right?

    right?

You’re right, it’s certainly not the camera but it does help. I’d be jealous too.

    Dave.

PS. Keep up the good work.

You will feel better when you first see her pictures… or you will just feel sorry for her.

I heard that a D3 can create an image on it’s own… you just put it on a tripod, it zooms, focuses, makes the adjustments and you can download the final image… but it might be a lie, I don’t know ;)

I was just thinking you would really be jealous if she got a decent camera, a CANON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although a nice camera helps, in the end it is about practise/passion/experience/etc to get the results.

But I do think I need a diamond encrusted tripod to raise my game. It would match my camera strap nicely.

my blood is still boiling. but then as my husband pointed out, she might lose interest and sell it to me cheap. :)[/i]

I read this earlier went to reply but stopped…

Maybe its jealously on my part too, but that sort of thing would really bug me.
Like it bugs me when I see some spoilt rich brat on TV carrying the latest camera, just using it as a P&S. Having it just because it costs more, not because they know what it can do.

But that’s the child in me so I’ll stop ranting now.

I guess that its great that your friend can afford all those things. I hope she enjoys them. And the bright side is that if she enjoys the hobby you’ll have someone to compare notes with!

I think this is a fairly normal feeling to have! It is very frustrating when people can get a hold of all the gear you want in one fell swoop, especially when you know they don’t have the first clue on how to use it properly.

I want a Canon 1Ds MkIII with a 16-35L lens, but the simple truth is that I can’t afford that setup right now. I don’t have many friends who are into photography, but I do get annoyed when I see other photographers not make full use of the equipment I would love to have.

Nothing you can do really, apart from make her jealous with your images!

    Just mess with her head.

Fill her with doubt on her purchase.

    Thats what I’d do.

    Jealousy is a bi-acth

Has she decided what she’s going to take pictures of yet?
I’d suggest fashion…sounds like she’d get on well with Ms McCartney.

Just wondering will you be inviting her to join us on PI and then we can all pick on her.

I think you should be pleased for your friend. You did say “friend”?
    You should encourage her as much as possible; share your knowledge;
advise her on the best techniques; help her go through her pics and
    show her how to improve.

That’s what friends are for. She may have access to more funds, but
if she’s a real friend that won’t matter – to you or her. Money’s just a
way of measuring, and if you have enough food, and your kids are healthy,
money doesn’t really matter at all.

If I was rich enough, I’d send down a D3 for you, to prove my point.

…and if all that doesn’t work out – sabotage her memory cards….
