My First Portrait

Hi! I took my first portait shot a few weeks ago of my Mum. She’s the principal of a school who are producing a reunion book and I wanted a nice picture of her to go in it. This was taken with my D40 and 50mm 1/8f on MF and has been PS’d to give it more contrast. I sat her at my bay window with the blinds down, switched on a few lights and made her hold some white A4 sheets underneath to get some reflections on the left hand side of her face. She was delighted with the result and I was quite proud of it too. C&C most welcome on my first attempt! :D

I don’t know much about portrait type stuff.. in fact I know close to nothing.. but here’s what the natural instincts are telling me:

The conversion is good but the face seems a tad on the dark side… especially the LHS.

The angle wouldn’t be for me… my head is tilted trying to view the image in the, for want of a better word, “proper” sense.

it’s very sharp, which i find very hard to do so well done. i have to agree with nfl though, it’s a touch too dark and the angle makes me dizzy.

i’m a fan of unusual angles but maybe for the purpose it’s being used for, as the principal, a more conservative angle might be more appropriate.

For that type of portrait the angle is wrong and as NFL said it’s too dark on LHS, besides that it’s sharp and a pleasent smile from the subject.

    Hi Marie-

    Well that looks very professional-
nice lighting, though It might be a little dark-
    and very natural pose-

It looks to me like you might have been working on a layout-
    maybe-
It might be a little too tilted,
but I can see it working in conjunction with type on a page-

    Very good first portrait anyway-

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

Yeah it is a tad dark on the LHS (shame the books gone to print!) Not having lights and reflectors does’t help much…A4 paper can only do so much :D

I did try some more conservative angles and although they looked ok this one fitted the space better. Will take your points on board when I do my next!.

I’m presuming you used PS to get the background white as well??

yeah I did – I don’t have lightroom / appature so I used the levels on PS for this.

I’m no expert, but for your first portrait shot, i think its class… well done…. you should be really pleased with your self!
If you take on board what the others have said and learn from them ,your portraits will be something to look forward to in my opinion

    hey

Aside from the face being a little on the dark side I really lke it. It looks very natural and I love jaunty angles. Although I think this might be a little too severe, just a tad though.
