Do you own a Canon…
-
johnc24Participant
Hi all
Im sure some of you may be aware im on the lookout for a 40D
But my query is do YOU have the canon 40D and if so what do you think of it?
whats the pros and cons of it from your point of view.I am pretty sure im gonna get it soon but it never does any harm to get all the info one can
Thanks all
regards
JohnguthrijParticipantIf you already have some Canon lenses then it is as good as it gets short of the 1D series. However if you are just starting out consider the Nikon D300. I am a Canon user but Nikon seem to have stolen the march on Canon recently.
johnc24Participantthanks guthrij
I already have a canon 400D and a couple of lenses but im offloading them to get the 40D as I say.
Thanks for the info

paulParticipantI wouldn’t say that Nikon have gone ahead at all. Canon will most likely have a new set of bodies to release in Aug.
Anyway, I have the Canon 40D and think it’s a great camera. It has many nice functions, and is just a step short of the 1D series.
I can certainly recommend the 40D as a great camera.
steelydanParticipantJohnc24 it depends on your photography needs. I find Liveview on the 40D excellent of you are doing Macro photography. Its also great for sports as it has a very fast shutter burst, sturdy and weather proof (not waterproof) Its a good step up from the 400D but I would not say there is not much of a difference between the 30D and 40D. Incidentally I went from a 10D to a 40D which was justified.
johnc24Participantnfl-fanParticipantI own both the 400D and the 40D. I really don’t think that when it boils down to the essentials that there’s much to seperate the cameras.
Image quality wise the two are pretty much inseperable as far as I am concerned. They both do a good job.
I like the fact that the 400D uses the rear LCD to display your camera settings.. the details are clear and easy to see. You can’t do this on the 40D… you have to use the panel on the top of the camera which is smaller, offers less clarity and you find yourself strained to see the settings sometimes. I prefer the LCD method.
The 40D has live view… I’d say I’ve only used it a half a dozen times… in akward angle shooting scenarios… but if it was gone tomorrow I wouldn’t miss it in the slightest… I prefer the view finder.
The High Speed Shutter Burst mode on the 40D is very useful… I use it a lot for birds and sports.
The countdown timer on the 400D is set to 10 seconds… which is too long in many situations. On the 40D you have a 10 second and 2 second countdown timer… I tend to use the 2 second timer 99% of the time.
After that… I can’t think of a whole lot extra to say about the two. A lot of people will lean towards the 40D because it’s the more “credible” option but to be honest I could do just as good a job with the 400D for 95% of the stuff I shoot.

DenverDollParticipantDon’t forget to give the 450D some consideration!
It has the highest resolution of all three. As much as a lot of people deny that matters, the difference can be seen.

Not sure if this is what you meant, but the 40D is able to display camera settings on the LCD, you’d cycle through the view options (Info button) depending on how you set up your menu.
I’m very happy with my 40D, it is a very capable and reliable camera. I moved up from the 20D, which is now a backup body. IQ is much improved on the 40D, especially at high ISO. I don’t have much to complain about the 40D. I know that we’re at the current (affordable!) sensor sensitivity, but 3200 is still a bit stiff imo, though perhaps still usable, if only just (it’s a push setting rather than native, i.e. custom function “H”, pushing 1600 an extra stop).
One niggle though is that the C1, 2, 3 custom settings on the dial will reset when the camera is in standby. When you set the C1, 2, 3 settings, it also records the current aperture and shutter speed set. If your custom setting is f5.6 at 1/125, and you are working at an aperture of, say, f2.8 and shutter speed of 1/500 and take a few mins between shots so that you have to wake the camera from standby by half-pressing the shutter button, it’ll revert to the pre-recorded in-camera setting of f5.6 at 1/125, making it an extra fiddle to set up again.

I was thinking/hoping/praying that someone would correct me on the LCD.. thanks a mill Stas… very useful.
