Sigma 50-500mm f/4 HSM or Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 HSM

Just looking for some advice please on these two lenses. I’ve been photographing at Kildare County FC’s home games recently using my Nikon D40 and Sigma 70-300mm lens. I have found that towards the end of the match the lighting becomes very poor and my shutter speed has to be reduced. I should be in the market for a new lens soon and really like the look of the 50-500mm, however would i be better off with the 70-200mm since its f2.8?
Or, are there any other good lenses for sports in the €600 – €1000 price range??

The 50-500mm isn’t F4 throughout the entire focal range… it varies betwen F/4 and F/6.3, probably F/6.3 when fully extended.

The 70-200mm is f/2.8 throughout the entire focal range.

So for low light conditions.. you’ll be better served by the 70-200mm.

But then the questions begs to be asked.. what’s more important.. increased range or wider aperture?

    Would agree with that

Two other options for increased range might be:

Opt1: Nikon Zoom 80-400mm 80-400 f/4.5-5.6 D VR, No supposed to be the sharpest but it is 5.6 at the long end with VR
Opt2: Nikon prime 300mm f/4D ED IF AF-S with Nikon 1.4 converter, very sharp option (with 1.4 tele you will have a 5.6 lens at 420mm, or a 300mm F4 without the tele, no zoom though)

Both options come in around 1000euro….

Personally from the sounds of what you are looking for, the sigma 70-200 2.8 is what i would go for

Just be careful here… I see you are shooting with a Nikon D40… the one camera that is fussy about lenses. Some of these lenses may not provide autofocus with the D40 so be warned.

Good point from NFL, D40 autofocus only works with AFS lenses so opt1 above looks out
