Heron — Handy Image Stabaliser on 100-400
-
andytippParticipant
I was walking along the River Suire in Clonmel last Summer.. ( I think we got a few days of sunshine then… ) I spotted this Heron standing in the water besides some fast flowing water. The bird was rock steady waiting for his lunch to appear. I used the 100-400 with Stabaliser on ‘ As I wanted to get some movement in the water as a blur. It was a very bright day, so I used ISO 50 and F22 to ensure a slow shutter speed. Amazingly the IS did its job and hand holding at 1/40th I got the picture. I guess a ND filter would have also been handy to reduce light and give slow Shutter.. Of course I had not Tripod so I was relying on the IS….
Camera was the EOS 1DS Mk2
Comments welcome..
Andy
MikkaParticipantSpot on Andy, wonderful shot, technically there is absolutely nothing wrong with this IMO (unqualified as it may be). The blur in the water is just right. I think you might have a dust spot just to the right of the bird….Mikka

Many thanks for the comments.. I can’t see the dust spot, but my glasses need replacing.. :} Thankfully I have had a sensor clean since this one last summer…
i think credit goes to Canon’s Stabaliser system, it certainly proved useful in these circumstances, caught without a tripod.
Being self critical I guess a slight crop taking some of the right of the image might have helped the bird being too dead central.. Not sure what others might think.
Again , thanks for looking.
AndysteelydanParticipantGreat shot Andy I think the Heron is suitably placed and its nice to see some of its surroundings as it shows a natural shot.Excellent piece of handheld photography, i too have to 100-400 and its an excellent lens (although never ventured to f22  )
andytippParticipantThanks John, for comments. Yes, the 100-400 is a very useful lens. Although it can struggle in low light Sports photography… Saving to get a 300 2.8L
Andy also, just checked the Exif.. I was sightly mistaken on the F Stop for the Heron pic. it was, in fact F20..( ! )Cheers

Just looked at your pics on your Web site.. Some Stunning images on there.. Well done.
AndySeaviewParticipantVery nice wildlife shot Andy, I too have that lens which I find great for wildlife shots. You certainly produced an excellent shot with such a slow shutter speed.
Dave.
andytippParticipantThanks Dave – yes it is a popular lens. There have been questions about some poor copies on the EOS Forum . I have sent my one back a couple of times, but self induced.. ( I dropped it.. ! ) , would not recommend that to anyone…:} A New IS system and all is well again.
AndyMarkKeymasterThats one of the best Heron shots I’ve seen here Andy.
Excellent (oh and welcome to the site!)
jb7ParticipantHello Andy, and welcome to the site-
that’s a great shot alright-I can’t help wanting to get just a bit closer to the bird though,
it seems a little loosely framed-
more for the water really-Good colour too-
Looks great-j
joe_elwayParticipantWelcome along. Clever idea with the water blurring. The only criticism I’d have would be to crop it so the Heron is on the right 1/3 vertical of the shot. It’ll look better placed and allow you to focus in on the subject a bit more.
So when are you giving up the day job as a brain surgeon. Even with IS, 1/40th is sloooooow with that lens.
BrickeeParticipantandytippParticipantThanks for recent remarks.. Appreciated comments re web site. (Jim) . Aidan – I do agree , re Cutting some of the RHS of pic off, and bird maybe too central.
Thanks Mark …Andy
