Some moths – to flash or not to flash…..

    Hi All

here are some moths photographed today. i got a new ring flash on Wednesday and am playing about a bit with it (largely with not too much success – there’s clearly an art to it). Kit used – canon Eos 350D, Sigma DG macro 105mm, Sigma EM 140 DG ringflash.

Hopefully the sizing is right now following nfl-fan’s instructions

Any comments on the following would be great, especially on the use of flash. Thanks

Chinese character moth – this is a tiny moth, only about 10mm long. the photo is taken at 1:1. ringflash used

    Brimstone moth – ringflash used

    Brimstone again with natural light

Brimstone close up with flash – 1:1

    Gold spot moth with ringflash

    Gold spot natural light

    cheers

Nice shots Will. Tought the flash work still needs a little bit of effort. Settings you could try and I regularly use when shooting lifesize and higher.

#1 Set the camera to shutter priority (TV) mode.
#2 Underexpose the ambient light by 2 full stops.
#3 Set flash exposure compensation (FEC) to -2/3.
#4 Set the ratios on the flash light to 2:1
#5 When exposing the image try and keep the shutter speed no slower then 1/40th of a sec.
#6 The f value should be between 11 and 16.

With the settings above you are able to freeze the image with the flash and still achieve nice coloured backgrounds.

    I hope this helps. :)

most people would choose butterflies over moths but these photos have prooved that the moths are just as interesting and beautiful as their winged sister. well done!
