One foot in the door…

I’ve just been given the green light by a local photographer to come and join them on Saturdays when they are out working at weddings. I’ve worked with them before but I was the client and employed them for a graphic design job so know them a wee bit, which is good, but I wanted to ask people here do they have any tips and advice for me before I head out on the first shoot which is a wedding in 2 weeks time. I’m meeting them at the brides house and then following on to the chapel and reception after that.
What’s the protocol? They said its ok for me to take my own equipment and take some shots myself etc., which is a good start but I don’t want to be stepping on any toes and what kind of things should I offer to do for them?
It’s all voluntary BTW.
I’m really excited about this as it could be the start of something for me so don’t want to mess it up!
AimeeParticipantsummerdreamnMemberGfoxParticipantThats a great chance to get some practical experience … Well done.. Firstly I would have a quick chat with the photographer and set out exactly what you are both looking to achieve from it… Ask the obvious questions like what to do and when… No point standing there wondering whilst a good chance slips by and plus asking questions does not show a lack of knowledge but that you are eager to learn… I always find it puts your mind at ease when you are comfortable with the situation and know exactly whats happening.. As regards what to do for them, just assist them in anyway you can and show you are keen, not afraid to help out and get stuck in..
Most of all enjoy it and a good luck..easParticipantagree with Gfox – you’d be better off asking the photog this question. How people use their assistants varies wildly.
I’d imagine he/she will brief you before the job?
well done.
damiendParticipanti was thinking well done till i read this It’s all voluntary BTW.
just because you feel you have your foot in the door as you say there is no need to do the work for nothing even apprentices get paid something the old saying stands work for nothing and you will always be busy sorry if that sounds a bit negative but if you dont value yourself how do you expect other people to value you. but good luck hope with works well for youmarkcapilitanParticipantNothing wrong with doing a couple of gigs for nothing, as long as you can use the photos you shoot for your own use/portfolio/albums. If it’s only a couple of weddings, absolutely nothing wrong with doing it for free IMO. Now if its a regular second shooter gig…that’s different, and yes you should get paid, especially if main photographer is using some of your stuff too.
mtmccallionParticipantthanks for the best wishes everyone! as far as I am aware I won’t be a second shooter. They are a team of 2 so have back up already…my main aim for being there is to get some pro advice, get some good snaps for my own folio and learn as much as I can. As for how long this gig will last I don’t know – but I do know what you mean. Don’t want to be taken advantage of either so will defo get some boundaries laid out before it all happens. I work full time as a designer so this is just a Saturday gig not a full time apprentership.
