MartinOCParticipantJohn,
Wonderful colours in your photos. On 1 the colours of the sky and boat and rope and undergrowth are great.
The composition does lead the eye off to the side a bit, I think you could have centred the boat more, or found an better composition, maybe straight on the back of the boat.In 2 I think it would have been better to have the flower in focus too, you could have used a smaller aperture and focused on the flowers, to get everything sharp. But you spotted a great scene, if the flower was in focus it would be a great shot, imho.
Of 3 & 4 number 4 is best. Number 3 doesn’t have the strong composition of a single flower or object, it is missing something.
I like to take similar photos to yours when I find such scene, and I play around with the composition and aperture a lot, many shots to learn what works, eg like in number 2 – selective focus on the boat, then selective on the flower and also large dof to get both in focus – see which works best.
Basically you have spotted a great scene with great potential, I would take lots of shots to find the best angles/composition, and also go to both ends of your aperture range (and maybe the middle) to see what works.Lovely scenes a bit extra on the composition needed in the first 3. That’s what I think, hope it helps. 1 & 4 are best for me.

steelydanParticipantThanks Martin for the in-depth critique I would have to agree with your points regarding composition
The flowers were shot at f4 on the 70-200 handheld, just checking out more for sharpness then DOF.
The Boat was a difficult one as I had to nearly lie down to get rid of a lot of houses behind on the other side of the road, I would have liked my 12-24 with me but I was awaiting on a replacement due to the accident with the first. So I had to suffice with the 17-40.
Needless to say the one with the paint and flower/weed the wind was very strong and it was hard to get the flower in focus with the paint so i left it flutter
Thanks again its nice to get a good feedback especially when you commented on all photos..By the way I like #4 best myself.Took about 15 of that to get one without the flower bending in half.
