Unusually I was able to get real close to this butterfly on the window sill.

Wow – these are as good as any close ups I’ve seen of a butterfly (looks like a small tortoiseshell). it’s great to see all the individual scales on the wings.

It’s 2 and 3 for me. 2 has great interest in the underwing pattern and 3 has great focus on the eye plus the additional interest of the ginger colour on the top of the thorax.

    really great shots

what where they taken at? – 3 or 4:1?

They are all lifesize. He flew off before I could take any more shots. #1 is cropped on the left and right to to turn the image a portrait mode. #2 is uncropped. #3 cropped and turned a few degrees. #4 is cropped left and right like #1.

I think it was a tortoiseshell. I was quite susprised when he opened his wings. The contrast with the underside is quite remarkable.

Great shots, number 3 best for me. What lens did you use?

Cheers Gareth. #1 is my favourite.

PD_Barbs, The lense is the MP-E65mm and MT-24EX twinlite flash.
